I Am a Mackerel

This is a picture book that started with a simple question: “Where did the mackerel come from?” Mackerel, a blue-backed fish, is the synonym of healthy food that we often find on the dining table but is generally not favored by children. However, if children hear the story that the mackerel tells, they may change their mind.

The mackerel in this book talks about the sea that he embraced before he was placed on the dining table. The mackerel says he comes from a sea that is too wide to express its breadth no matter how long we stretch our arms. He also says that he tried to become a mackerel with strong bones by climbing hills and mountains under the sea. It’s just like we climb mountains to become a person with strong bones. The mackerel also contains the soft, warm energy of the sea. When plankton eat seaweed grown with sunlight under the shallow sea, tiny fish eat the plankton, and the mackerel eat the tiny fish. In such a way, the energy of the sun spreads through all these creatures, and thereby all the creatures in the sea have the sun’s energy in them.

The mackerel carries in his mind all his memories: being born as a little egg; embracing the warm clouds reflected on the sea and the energy of the sun while swimming in the wild sea; climbing up and down steep hills; and wisely defeating fish larger than him. The author encourages us to contemplate all the creatures around us through this story of the mackerel.

‘고등어는 어디에서 왔을까?’라는 단순한 질문으로 시작하는 그림책이에요. 식탁 위에서 자주 만나는 식재료, 등 푸른 고등어는 건강한 음식의 대명사지만, 아이들은 그리 좋아하지 않는 음식이기도 하지요. 하지만 고등어가 품고 있는 이야기를 알게 된다면 아이들의 생각이 바뀔지도 몰라요.

이야기 속 고등어는 식탁 위에 올라오기 전까지, 자신이 품었던 바다의 이야기를 풀어놓아요. 고등어는 우리가 아무리 양팔을 길게 뻗어도 그 넓음을 표현할 수 없을 만큼 넓은 바다에서 왔다고 말하지요.그리고 바닷속의 언덕과 산을 오르며 가시가 튼튼한 고등어가 되기 위해 노력했어요. 우리가 뼈가 튼튼한 사람이 되기 위해 등산하는 것처럼 말이에요.

또 보드랍고 따뜻한 해의 기운도 품고 있었어요. 얕은 바다에서 햇볕을 받고 자라는 바다풀을 플랑크톤이 먹으면, 그 플랑크톤을 작은 물고기가 먹었고, 그 작은 물고기를 고등어가 먹었으니까요. 해의 기운은 이렇게 바다의 온 생물들에게 전해졌고, 바다의 모든 생물은 해의 기운을 품고 있는 거였지요. 

바다에서 아주 작은 알로 태어나, 때로는 거친 바다를 헤엄치며 바다에 비친 따뜻한 구름과 해의 기운을 품고, 가파른 언덕을 오르내리며, 자기보다 커다란 물고기를 지혜롭게 물리쳤던 기억이 고등어 안에 모두 담겨 있다. 이주희 작가는 이 고등어 한 마리의 이야기로 우리 주변의 모든 생명체에 대해 고민하게 해 준다.
