(English) Whale Rock
In a fable written by author Soon-won Lee in his own style, a large rock (whale rock) on the summit of a mountain range that can’t move by itself dreams of going to the ocean. Its long and excruciating journey of finally reaching the ocean by the provision of nature makes us reflect on ourselves on “how dreams are achieved.” The weathering process of the large rock is cracked, broken, and shattered to become sand and finally being embraced by the ocean is described in plain sentences, leading readers to realize the provision of nature and the essence of our life. Whale Rock is a story of candid reflections on nature and life that we must keep close to appreciate and meditate on in the course of our lives. A revised edition was reborn with illustrations drawn by the technique of hanji (traditional Korean paper) collage.
