Overview

The affection that Huindol, a Korean Jindo, and the poet have for each other tenderly touches the reader’s heart.

Book Intro

A poet who writes poems alone in the countryside with only his ill body and Huindol, a Korean Jindo that has been the poet’s only family for over five years. The poet’s older sister who lives at a slight distance and her Jindo, Norangi, and the old lady next door occasionally drop by, but the poet and Huindol practically have only each other. The two eat at the same table and sleep in the same room. The poet goes to the village market on Huindol’s birthday to treat him to a bowl of rice served in soup and rehearses a lecture in front of Huindol. They act as each other’s trustworthy guardian when they go to the hospital and to the veterinary clinic. But the poet’s illness gets worse, and eventually he dies. Huindol, who has refused to eat or sleep since the day the poet lay in his deathbed, grows weak and falls ill. When Huindol gains consciousness for a minute, he catches a glimpse of Norangi and five puppies. Norangi has given birth to Huindol’s pups. At the sight of the puppies energetically sucking on Norangi’s teats, Huindol recovers his strength.
