Seven shocking and thoughtful thought experiments that shed light on the present through technologies of the future
At the very edge of the Solar System, a strange nanny protects a new race of humans. A group of time travelers journeys back in time to create a god. A zany galactic war unfolds in the athletics field of an elementary school. A legal battle is waged against a novelist father who is undergoing the last rebellious phase in human history. Seven stories of intellectual experimentation unfold in a blend of gripping narratives and fantastical explorations.
“The Proxy War”
In an age when galactic travel to Earth is possible, aliens project their minds into human Hosts to experience life on Earth. The narrator, an Agent who oversees these extraterrestrial tourists, realizes that her clients aren’t there for sightseeing. Unfortunately, she also runs into her ex-girlfriend at the same time. The chase between Earthlings and alien invaders leads them to an elementary school in the unassuming city of Bucheon, where a galactic war unfolds in the schoolyard. An epistolary novel that combines bloody battle with comedy, action, and a tragic confession to an ex-lover.
“Su-Ryeon’s Children”
Abused daily by her husband, Chae Su-Ryeon is a janitor who falls short in looks, intellect, and social skills. Unable even to have children, her only joy in life is making children’s sweaters and hats that she cannot give to anyone. But one day, during a cleaning session at the LK Bio-Engineering Lab, she runs into a child who is wearing one of her sweaters. When she tries to follow the child, an accident befalls her. As a result, Su-Ryeon gains superhuman intelligence and physical strength that modern science cannot explain. Slowly losing the human form, she pursues a shadow of the child into a mysterious new world.
