A picture book of depth that suggests a play for children and thinking for adults.
10 Seconds, the picture book of Lee Myoung Ae, allows us think about the relationship between humans and nature on a higher level. We commonly think the greed and mistakes of humans make the weaker creatures lose their footing. So many authors ask how humans live a life that leads to the reflection on themselves and suggest readers take to the road.
Lee Myoung Ae also feels sorry about humans’ greed and carelessness. Her thoughts are embodied in Plastic Island, her first picture book. In her second book 10 Seconds, the author delivers her thought that animals and humans seem separate but maybe in fact they exist to live together and disappear together in a very confined space, a space constantly mixed and turning upside down. Like a water ball in which everything can be transformed within as short as 10 seconds, the world may be like that. Like the game "rock, paper, scissors," which you can’t win forever, the author doesn’t draw a clear conclusion. She just leaves enigmatic words behind.
A swaying for 10 seconds.
A play for 10 seconds.
Things that disappeared in the short time.
Somewhere, the time wakes again.
Now, the person who can wake the time up is you holding this book.
