“The Dragon of Malice and Terror Is One All Too Well Known”
The scene is Wu-icheon Stream in Dobong-gu, Seoul. Some children discover a hideous ice pagoda that has been swept down by the stream. At the bottom of the pagoda, what looks like a lizard is barely breathing, and the kids C and Y, who are mesmerized by the sight, return home holding the lizard like treasure. Their father K is displeased with this weird creature, which has a white horn on its nose like some kind of irritation. K argues that there is no way this strange-looking creature is a lizard, but the people around him treat him like he is crazy. At night, K suffers from unbearable nightmares and is pained at the changing image of the lizard. Dreams and reality are entangled, making it impossible for K to distinguish which is which.
“The Image in the Profile Picture”
The heroine A came to know B, who is extremely inept socially but active on social media, when she was preparing a class presentation on discrimination against minorities in middle school. According to A, B is “the North Star of my soul” and “my personal Yoon Suh-in (a notorious far-right cartoonist. Translator’s note).” Whenever A came across a problem that worried her and required some thinking, she could avoid the worst outcome if she just waited and watched where B headed, and then avoid that choice. One day, to A’s surprise, B changes the profile picture on a messenger to one in which B is holding hands with a woman, C. B suggests that A and B meet together with C, and A realizes that there is another reason behind this unbelievable suggestion.
“Cube Sea Surface Creature”
Kitkat is a surprisingly innocent man. Just give him two cucumbers, and he could play all day, rubbing them together. The main character met him when he was looking for a person to share a guesthouse with to save some money during a trip to Busan. Kitkat was a foreigner who couldn’t speak Korean well, but he becomes best friends with the hero, a college student currently taking a break from school. The hero soon runs out of money and plans to return home, when Kitkat says there’s a way to stay together and offers him a job--none other than as a chef’s assistant on a submarine. The captain hires the hero, saying that Kitkat needed someone to play with. The mysterious voyage begins and a few days later, the captain suddenly opens the door, enters and takes Kitkat. After that, Kitkat returns exhausted each time he is summoned....
