Overview

The First Picture Book by a Young Man with Developmental Disabilities Who Loves to Draw Subway Trains

Book Intro

(English) A Subway to the South Pole

Every Tuesday, Kim Seong-chan draws pictures. He usually draws subway trains, and while he does it, the drawing paper turns into a world of his own. Gwon Eun-jeong had long assisted him as art therapist and waited for his development. As the lessons continued, she came to believe that his unique pictures were too interesting to be seen as merely the work of a person with disabilities. She therefore showed his pictures to her friend Kim Gyeong-hwa, a writer. Kim Seong-chan’s drawings of subways and the scenes of the South Pole captured Kim Gyeong-hwa’s heart. The stories hidden in the pictures spoke to her, and she wrote down the stories with joy. The whole project with Kim Seong-chan was slow and sometimes difficult, but they kept at it. The three prepared the book together with a lot of time and effort. Finally, they sent the picture book out into the world with confidence, like the energetic subway train in the book.

(Japanese)
