Overview

This book is Korea's first historical fairy tale, consisting of a total of 11 volumes. It is a 21st-century revival of a sea story that was written during the 17th century.

Book Intro

A boys’ nautical fiction novel written by Kim Namjoong the bravest storyteller of our time!

This series depicts a story that occurs at an ocean faraway during the Joseon Dynasty in the 17th century. The author was inspired by Hendrick Hamel’s journal, which Hamel wrote to detail his experiences after surviving a shipwreck on Jeju island while attempting a voyage to Japan in 1653. The author asks the question, “What if a child from Joseon had left for Europe along with Hamel?” inspiring his creation of the protagonist Haepoong, who boldly rejects the fate of living as a frog in a well, choosing to venture along the ocean route from the South China Sea and across the Atlantic Ocean. Born in 1654, thirteen-year-old Haepoong leaves for Nagasaki with Hamel in 1666 and travels to Indonesia, goes around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, and then passes through the Netherlands, the West Indies, Mexico, and back into the Pacific Ocean, broadening his horizons and filling up his heart with the world’s many different places. What unfolds is a story of 4 years of growth and great adventure.

To pick one phrase repeated the most by Haepoong, it would be “Let's try.” Bravery is not about blindly pushing for something. When we recognize the adversities that lie before us and yet still set our minds on something with the determination to overcome all challenges, that is what we call courage. Haepoong shows this courage through his adventures. Venturing the vast seas where pirates may attack at any time can be too much to handle for an Asian child unfamiliar with Westerners. But Haepoong willingly accepts his fate. The true value and highlight of this series lie in the reader being able to use the protagonist Haepoong, who continues to persevere and move forward amidst countless troubles, to reflect on his or her own life through the protagonist and realize their own straight, bright paths as well as the courage and determination needed to make a decision at a crossroads.

Each volume in the series touchingly portrays characters who try their best to follow the right path in the midst of a miserable historical reality. Although they are not big heroes, the desperate hearts of the characters, who try their best at every moment to follow the right path in their lives, will resonate with readers. Such characters include Joseon potters who have been kidnapped and brought to Japan, a prince trying to protect his kingdom in Indonesia, a princess named Kokodo who has been taken from Africa to live as a slave, a man named Father Juan who risks his life to liberate slaves, and natives who try to protect themselves from invasion by Westerners in the Pacific Islands. Each character is indispensable and faithfully committed to doing their parts from the places they stand.

Recommendation

“A book that can be a good friend for children in the 21st century on their journey to find themselves, make their own choices, take on challenges, and move the world while courageously facing the frustrating and grim reality of life.” - Lee Juyeong (CEO of Children's Cultural Alliance, Department of Education for Children Reading at Kyungmin University), 2013

“The setting of the Joseon Dynasty, when the wind was the driving force, is already overwhelming. The sheer volume and background of the story are overwhelming for fairy tales in Korea.” - Kim Hyewon (Children's Book Critic), 2013

“I’d like to applaud the author’s perseverance; this kind of work isn’t common in Korea.” - Han Mihwa (Director of Korea Publication Marketing Institute, columnist, publication’s critic), 2019
