Overview

This book tells the story of ‘pink door people’ who suddenly lost their loved ones and had 72 hours to be with that person again.

Book Intro

This book contains a heartbreaking and desperate fantasy in which Park Jinjeong, a father whose life fell apart after losing his wife in a car accident, and his son Park Hyanggi spend 72 hours with his mother, who returns as a small figure like Thumbelina with wings.

The “pink door” is a lasting trace of the mother, who had always loved the color pink. Because of her love of the color pink, the family are called “pink door people” in the neighborhood. The mother, who went out to buy tofu, was never able to come back, and the life of the happy Pink Moon family had been shattered. Although a year and four months have gone by since her passing, the father and the son still experience many emotions, not knowing whether they are in anger or sadness, etc. The father neglects his hat store as he always drinks under the pretext of his emotions, and the son, Park Hyanggi, has his mind stuck in video games and doesn’t care about school.

One day, a magpie is found sitting in front of the house as if it had been waiting! Hyanggi plants what appears to be a seed left by the magpie, and the next day the fruit opens up, revealing his mother. “Three evenings, three afternoons, and three mornings—a very short time to do something, but a tearfully precious time to do nothing.” What would people do if they had suddenly lost their loved ones but later became blessed with the opportunity to spend some more time with those loved ones? Being such a special time, the pink door people decide to spend it in a really special way. Doing small but precious things like eating together, going to the market to eat tteokbokki, buying groceries, making fun of each other and laughing, and just looking at each other’s faces. The pink door people, who once experienced losing this aspect of their everyday lives, come to realize that this time is special and precious.

“How long are you going to use me as an excuse? There is no such thing as living your life for someone else or something else. You live your own life. This is the truth I learned only after I visited the other world.” Not knowing what their mission is, the father and the son feel a bit sad. They wonder if their feelings toward their mother were reciprocated, and they just feel like whining and complaining like children. But little by little, they begin to change. In fact, all the words and behavior of Kim Jina (the mother) toward the two men cheer up the father and the son, who now have to muster up the strength again to live precious lives. Perhaps this book intends to offer the ability to live one’s own life anew, through consolation and encouragement. What really is Kim Jina's mission? And what are the last words that they shared when have to part again?
