The Missing Girl Who is Found Dead and the Boy Who Becomes the Suspect
Everyday Hyeon-ji goes out to post flyers never giving up hope of finding her daughter who went missing three years ago. One day, she runs into Da-in, a newspaper delivery boy. For some reason, he runs off seeing the flyer. Next, the police tell her that her daughter was found dead. The police who find a beetle at the crime site receive a tip that there is a boy who carries around a beetle. That boy turns out to be Da-in.
Meanwhile, Hyeon-ji receives an anonymous letter saying that Da-in is not the killer.
Another Girl is Found Dead
Da-in states in court that after his mother killed his little sister and herself, he became obsessed and has been collecting beetles found on corpses.
Hyeon-ji receives a second anonymous letter that tells the temperature and humidity of the crime site. Studying the growth rate of larva found on her dead daughter’s belongings, she finds out that the dead body had been moved from another place.
Another girl is found dead and Da-in goes on trial without arrest. Hyeon-ji brings Dain home who has nowhere to go.
The Grieving Mother and the Murder Suspect Under the Same Roof
Da-in’s pet beetles can detect a fire even from miles away and flock to it. Hyeon-ji is amazed at Da-in’s knowledge of beetles and tries to solve the case with his help, but he does not open up to her. He says that when he dies, he wants to die in a fire. That way he won’t be lonely.
Who is the Real Killer?
Hyeon-ji learns that Da-in’s pet beetles react to a specific chemical in hallucinogens and tries to find the real killer using this knowledge.
Meanwhile Da-in learns that it was Mr. Jo who murdered the second girl during his trial to prove that Da-in was not the killer. Mr. Jo was the man who took him under his wing when Da-in had become an orphan. However, Mr. Jo had been manipulating Da-in to realize his twisted dream of having “a family.”
Is Forgiveness Possible?
When Da-in finds out that Hyeon-ji is receiving threats, he decides to leave her house hoping to change things. Hyeonji finds out that it was Da-in who first took Ye-rin to Mr. Jo three years ago. However, now to save Ye-rin, Da-in sets up a trap for Mr. Jo in the forest. There Da-in and Mr. Jo are engulfed by flames. A huge group of beetles spread their wings and flock to the fire. Hyeon-ji also runs towards the fire.
