Book Intro

I Work at the Kaesong Industrial Complex

The story of a dietician who crossed the Military Demarcation Line and commuted to the Kaesong Industrial Complex.

The fiction-like event of becoming coworkers with North Korean residents was possible in the “Kaesong Industrial Complex” which was part of a South-North economic cooperation project. This book contains the story of people the author met working as a dietician in the Kaesong Industrial Complex for one year before it was closed. The news of North Korea we encounter are stories refined and adjusted through the mass media. However, there aren’t only Kim Jong Un and nuclear weapons in North Korea. There are also ordinary people who think of their family first when getting delicious food, go through conflicts between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law, and make kimchi for the winter. This book is filled with friendships blossoming between the author and North Korean residents, their compassion toward each other, and more.

About the Author

Kim Minju

(English) The writer or Kim is a person who silently prepares for the eventual but certain unification that will come to us. She spent all four seasons with over 3,000 North Korean laborers, providing food and managing their welfare, including the import and export of food ingredients at the NuriMi factory in the Kaesong Industrial Complex. Even after the sudden closure of the factory, she widened her perspective on North Korea by supporting settlement at the North Korea Refugees Support Foundation and meeting North Korean refugees from all walks of life in various regions. She continues her activities such as giving lectures on peace and unification and volunteering at the North Korea Refugee Settlement Support Office.
