Overview

This book tells the story of Laika, the dog that was sacrificed in the space race between the US and USSR in the 1950s, as an introspective look at the advancement of science and the ethics of life.

Book Intro

(English) A story that looks back on animal sacrifice and the advancement of science.

In the 1950s, the Soviet Union and the United States were in the middle of the space race. The two countries dedicated every resource they had to space development. In order to investigate whether humans could survive in space, they launched spaceships with experimental animals.

Starting with the friendship and love between Jakob and the dog sacrificed by the competitive ego and dominating spirit of man, Laika, this book looks back at the countless animals who died in the name of science. Many animals have been sacrificed in experiments outside of the space programs, such as in the development of various medicines. It may be difficult to decide which has more value, the achievements in the aerospace and medical fields or the lives of the animals sacrificed, but this book offers an opportunity to think about the issue. It was written with the hope that children who read it will be able to think about the issue after finishing the book.
