Overview

This book depicts the smothering reality of adolescents and the profound despair that shakes their lives as they seek to deliver the hope that they will grow soundly into adults by dropping the drive for dying.

Book Intro

Something They Dropped

Order is a story about the people who follow the order. It contains the story of a boy who was massacred during the 5.18 Gwangju Democratization Movement delivered by the voice of the narrator, the boy’s friend who later becomes a math teacher. The narrator confesses that the math workbook his friend dropped before dying urged him to become a math teacher. This confession lets us realize that ‘the history is about never forgetting the name of a person,’ leaving a deep impression with us.

Are You Crying? is a story of Somi, a high school student, who witnesses a bizarre existence that is not human nor animal and is faced with the loneliness and sorrow that have been making an outcry inside her heart.

Please, This is Love tells about the feelings of Minha, a high school student, who can’t help but give up what she wants as she fails to communicate with her mom. It intensely displays the oppression and loneliness an adolescent suffers.

The Book of Curse shows Gyuri, a high school student who suffers from epilepsy. Depicting the painful everyday life in which she has fits in a cafe with no one around and stands up again wiping drool, this story illuminates Gury as a person who once put a curse on herself but who also steps forward steadily enduring the burden of her life.

Something He Dropped is the work based on which this book was created. It starts with a shocking incident where a boy regains his consciousness after attempting to commit suicide. A process is depicted where, returning alive from the trial of suicide, the boy comes to realize that what he truly desired was not dying. The heavy but innocent feelings of an adolescent are contained in the story.

Each narrator in the book drops something. They either drop their own body in the air or something they have kept in their heart. Always called ‘they,’ adolescents are standing their life at school. By calling them by their name, Something They Dropped vividly delivers the shock of death and life through the sensitive and powerful language employed by Lee Gyeonghye, the author, and the faith they have to all survive the despair.
