A Guide for Communicating with Photos

We are beyond the era of 24-cut and 36-cut film cameras or the digital camera. It is now the era of smart phone. The role of photos changed from commemorating special days to recording ordinary moments in our daily lives. Photographs have become a form of language and an ordinary mode of communication to depict stories. However, as photographs become part of our daily lives, the standard of "good photographs" has become more ambiguous. Photograph Reading is not a book that simply shares photos, but a guidebook that explains why photos are important and how to read the stories captured in each one. 

This book was inspired by the photograph of a migrant mother and her children at the US-Mexican border. The author shares his unique hands-on experience with photographs from the past and the present. The author's reporting on the Pregant Comfort Woman is paired with the author's experience of reporting on Chinese comfort women and poignantly caputures the controversal history. Robert Capa's major works come to life with testimonials of the author and his American colleague's experience. The author shares unknown stories about famous photographs and tells mesmerizing stories of unknown photos in a single volume. Borrowing from the intriguing and heart rending stories behind photographs, the author offers a different approach towards photographs -- a record of history and media -- as well as a framework to view our society.

사진으로 소통하는 시대를 위한 안내서

24컷, 36컷짜리 필름을 장전하던 카메라에서 디지털 카메라로, 또다시 스마트폰으로 바뀐 시대를 지나왔다. 자연스럽게 사진은 특별한 날을 기념하기 위한 용도에서 일상의 모든 것을 기록하는 용도로 쓰임새가 바뀌었다. 사진은 이제 언어가 되어 우리의 이야기를 전달하는 일상의 소통 수단이 된 것이다. 하지만 사진이 일상화될수록 ‘좋은 사진’이 무엇인지에 대한 기준은 모호해지기만 했다. 『사진을 읽어 드립니다』는 단순히 사진을 설명하는 책이 아니라 사진이 왜 우리에게 필요하며, 사진에 담긴 이야기를 어떻게 읽어야 할지 보여 주는 안내서와 같다. 

이 모든 이야기는 미국과 멕시코 국경에서 촬영한 ‘캐러밴 모녀’ 사진으로 전 세계 언론의 주목을 받은 한국인 로이터 통신 사진 기자로부터 나왔다. 2019년 ‘로이터 통신 올해의 사진’ 수상, ‘POYi 국제보도사진전’ 등에서 상을 받고 활발히 활동 중인 저자는 현장이 아니라면 어디서도 겪을 수 없는 유일무이한 경험담과 함께 사진의 과거와 현재를 오가며 이야기를 펼친다. ‘일본군 위안부’ 문제를 거론할 때면 늘 빠지지 않는 ‘만삭의 위안부’ 사진은 저자가 직접 취재한 중국의 일본군 위안부 생존자 할머니들의 이야기와 함께 우리를 숙연하게 만들고, 전설적인 종군 사진가 로버트 카파의 대표작에 대한 미심쩍은 의혹들은 저자와 같은 로이터 통신에 근무하던 동료 미국인 사진 기자의 증언으로 한층 더 생생해진다.

우리에게 익숙한 사진들에서는 미처 알지 못했던 이야기를, 또 우리가 몰랐던 사진들에서는 신기하고 매혹적인 사연을 뽑아내어 책 한 권에 담았다. 로이터 통신 사진 기자로서 겪은 흥미진진한 때로는 안타까운 경험들을 중심으로 사진들의 뒷이야기를 통해 사진의 역사뿐 아니라 사진이라는 매체를 이해하고 더 나아가 사진을 통해 우리가 살고 있는 사회를 올바로 바라보는 시각까지 제시해 주는 책이다.
