Overview

This picture book depicts the harsh living conditions of children around the world as a way of drawing attention to children’s rights.

Book Intro

This picture Book “The Stories Shouldn’t Be True” is about the children in several countries who cannot even ask for their human rights. The book presents their burdensome life in a calm manner and makes the reader think about the fundamental rights of the children.

In various parts of the world, numerous people are suffering because of natural disasters, the terror that result from bombings caused by conflicts between various races, religions and the diseases that come from widespread poverty. Koreans are not particularly conscious of these issues however; it remains a fact of life that there are a multitude of people throughout the world who suffer because these problems and this is especially true for the children in such places.

The writer, who was personally astonished by these facts, planned this book to convey a simple truth and that is that even if we are living in different parts of the world and have distinct appearances, we are still all one family in this global village. To accomplish this goal, he wrote and illustrated this book by himself.

The unbelievable truths revealed in this book are astonishing and impressive as told in the literary storyline and literature installments which clearly show the writer’s character. As we turn page after page and the children from different countries send their greetings to their Korean friends, the children’s pitiful life is narrated in a very clear voice. By repeating these comparisons and gradations, the sensations and after effects strongly impact the reader. Additionally, a Korean child character appears and is shocked by the reality of the others the world that surrounds her and her innocence will touch the readers as something that be can be found in all of us. In the simple stories and pictures, we are expected to fill in the blanks with our thoughts.

The illustrations are roughly drawn in a collage format on recycled paper as it is the intention of the writer to emphasize the blankness and by the use of simplicity and roughness emphasize the overall tenor of the book.

This book not only demonstrates the incredible but also what is the true reality and through those efforts tells of the importance of the world as a community. The book is highly regarded and won the Ragazzi prize in the Bologna Children’s Bookfair.
