Overview

This book introduces the Korean customs for wishing a baby good health and happiness at his/her first birthday party.

Book Intro

"Dol" refer to the day of the first anniversary of a baby's birth. "Doljanchi" (first birthday party in Korean) is an old custom in Korea where people wish for the baby's health and happiness on his/her first birthday. In the past, before modern medicine, it was not easy for babies to survive until their first birthday. This made the first birthday very important. In this picture book, The First Birthday Party, Korea's indigenous culture, which continues in the present day, is depicted merrily.

A long time ago, a childless young married couple desperately prayed for a baby to the Birth Grandmother every day. The Birth Grandmother did not grant their wish easily, saying that even if a child was born, it would die soon after being possessed by a demon that spreads diseases. But she was impressed by the couple's devotion and finally gave them a baby boy. She also told them how to get rid of the demon and protect the boy. The couple promised to faithfully follow through the Birth Grandmother's instructions. As expected, as soon as the boy was born, a demon called Jeoqui, which makes many people ill, appeared and vigilantly waited for an opportunity to get to the boy. But Jeoqui was startled by a straw rope hanging on the front door and a red-bean-coated millet rice cake, which have the power to ward off demons, and ran away. The boy grew and grew and finally it was his first birthday. A first birthday party was held to celebrate his first year and the yard was filled up with guests. Jeoqui reappeared looking for a chance. The "Doljabi" began, a ceremony for predicting the child's future, and a skein, a bow, books, etc., were placed in front of him. When Jeoqui squeezed through the guests and charged at the child, the child grabbed the skein and decided his fate. Jeoqui could not do anything any more and ran far away because the skein the child grabbed represents health and long life.

Even now, many children have a traditional first birthday party. "Dol" is a culture found in the daily lives of Koreans today, not a tradition written only in words. This picture book, which depicts scenes from a happy first birthday party, evokes the meanings of first birthdays and family love.
