On a road at dusk - wham! - a dog is hit by a truck. Soon after, an old lady pulling a handcart appears. She puts the dog on her cart and heads home along the dark road. In the old lady's room, we see many animals who were hit by cars laid out on the floor. A dog and elk hit by a truck, a snake cut in half, a frog flatten like a piece of paper, and an owl with his feathers missing. The old lady does her best to look after the wounded, torn and cut animals. She pats them gently as if they are still alive, stiches their wounds, bandages their limbs, helps them close their eyes, and gives them a soft blanket for warmth. At sunrise, the old lady puts the animals on her handcart and heads out to somewhere. After passing through an unknown forest, a white duck greets the old lady. The mysteriosu old lady, who we don't know is a real being or an imaginary being, reaches out her heand of comfort and healing. The book delivers a message that makes us think about human civilization, which has achieved growth and advancement through the sacrifice of nature and life.
