L’Arbre danse est un livre accordéon de 15 mètres de longueur, un format quelque peu étrange et inhabituel. Dans ce livre, un arbre, autrefois touffu, perd progressivement ses feuilles, ses branches, laissant derrière lui seulement une souche. Sous le tronc coupé se trouve un monde souterrain où toutes sortes de créatures vivent en harmonie, dégageant une vitalité impressionnante. Il y a une multitude de vies, pourtant invisibles à nos yeux, qui bourgeonnent sous terre.

Les illustrations de ce livre commencent tout en haut de cet arbre jadis verdoyant et d’une beauté à couper le souffle. Mais à présent les feuilles ont disparu, les tiges pareillement et il ne reste plus que la souche. Pourtant la vie de cet arbre ne s’arrête pas là. Il donne naissance à de nouvelles vies, s’épanouit, s’harmonise avec d’autres, et enfin crée un nouveau monde. L’auteure explique cela par « L’arbre s’envole ».

Le cycle se poursuit, donnant naissance à de nouvelles vies, qui grandissent, s’épanouissent, s’unissent à lui, ne faisant plus qu’un avec l’arbre, pour former un nouveau monde.

Dans le monde « visible » à nos yeux, l’arbre semble condamné à se dessécher pour mourir sans ses branches. Mais dans le monde « invisible », il déborde de vitalité. 

L’auteure dépeint cette scène comme sous un microscope, donnant vie aux minuscules créatures. Les illustrations semblent abstraites et ambiguës, mais en observant attentivement, on peut y voir s’épanouir une myriade d’organismes vivants. On comprend mieux pourquoi l’auteure a choisi de représenter le monde souterrain de cette manière. Tout comme l’univers que nous connaissons n’est qu’une infime partie de l’univers entier, il en va de même pour l’arbre.

L’artiste a sûrement voulu montrer qu’il y a un univers au sein même de l’arbre et que tous les mondes sont interconnectés.

Une souche sans branches ni feuillage peut paraître misérable, pourtant un univers grouillant de vie s’y trouve. C’est lorsque l’on commence à considérer quelque chose d’insignifiant comme sans importance, qu’il s’éteint et c’est aussi ainsi que naissent les guerres. Le livre illustré L’Arbre danse est une paix qui embrasse tout ce qui nous entoure.

Эта книга в форме 15-метровой расписной ширмы наполнена картинами в жанре фантастического искусства. Кому-то эта вытянутая в длину книга может показаться даже слишком длинной. К тому же лицевая и задняя стороны её обложки не соединяются корешком, как мы к тому привыкли. В чём же секрет?
Открыв книгу, на первой странице мы видим зелёную крону дерева и уже представляем, как на следующем развороте будет красоваться могучий вяз, стерегущий деревню. Однако, перевернув страницу, мы видим летящие вниз оборванные ветви, а далее – белый лист со словами «Дерево течёт» и несколькими штрихами. Лишь на следующей странице наконец появляется само дерево, от которого остался один только невзрачный голый пень.
Книга начинается с самой макушки дерева – покрытого зелёной листвой дерева во всём своём великолепии. А теперь от некогда пышной кроны не осталось и следа. Впереди лишь неминуемая смерть. Однако жизнь дерева на этом не обрывается. Дерево течёт, порождая новую жизнь, растёт и расцветает вместе с ней, сливаясь в гармоничное целое, и в конце концов даёт начало новому миру.

This 15-meter-long folding book is a strange and unfamiliar picture book. 

The illustrations in this book begin at the very top of a single tree. A tree that once had green leaves that showed off its beauty. Now the leaves are gone, the trunk is gone, and only the base remains. But the life of this tree does not end there: it flows on, giving birth to new life, growing, blossoming, uniting with it, becoming one with it, and finally blossoming again into a new world. 

In the world where we can see it, it's just a tree with no trunk and looks like it will eventually dry up and die, but in the world where we can't see it, it's much more vibrant. The artist depicts this scene as if under a microscope, giving life to the tiny creatures. The painting is an abstraction that seems to be unrecognizable, but if you look closely enough, you can see the myriad of lives blooming up close and personal. Just as the universe as we know it is only a small part of a larger universe, so is the tree as we know it. Perhaps the artist wanted to let us know that there is a universe within the tree, and that worlds are interconnected.

15미터 길이의 병풍 그림책으로 조금 이상하거나 낯선 그림책입니다. 이파리 가득하던 나무가 하나둘 잘려 밑동만 남습니다. 잘린 나무 밑은 뿌리 속 세상입니다. 뿌리 속 세상은 생명력 넘치는 온갖 생물들이 한 몸처럼 살아 움직입니다. 우리 눈에는 보이지 않지만, 세상에는 수많은 생명이 피어나고 있습니다.

이 책의 그림은 나무 한 그루의 가장 꼭대기에서 시작합니다. 푸르게 자란 잎잎이 그 어여쁨을 뽐냈을 것 같은 나무 한 그루. 지금은 잎도 사라지고 줄기도 사라져 밑동만 남은 나무. 기다리는 건 죽음뿐인 나무. 그러나 이 나무의 생명은 여기서 끝나지 않습니다. 나무는 흘러흘러 새로운 생명을 낳고 자라고 꽃피고 화합하고 그것들과 하나를 이루더니 마침내 다시 새로운 세상을 피워 냅니다. 작가는 이를 ‘나무는 난다’고 표현합니다.

우리가 볼 수 ‘있는’ 세상에서는 줄기가 없어 끝내 말라 죽을 것만 같은 나무일 뿐이지만, 우리가 볼 수 ‘없는’ 세상에서는 훨씬 생명력 넘치는 모습을 펼쳐 보입니다. 작가는 이 모습을 마치 현미경으로 들여다보듯 그림에 표현하여 작은 생명들에 숨결을 더해 줍니다. 그림은 알 듯 모를 듯한 추상화인 듯하지만, 조금만 마음을 기울여 바라보면 수없이 피어나는 생명들과 매우 가까이에서 마주할 수 있는 구상화입니다. 이제야 왜 작가가 뿌리 속 세상을 이처럼 표현했는지 조금은 알 것도 같습니다. 우리가 아는 우주가 커다란 우주의 겨우 한 부분일 뿐인 것처럼, 우리가 아는 나무 또한 그렇습니다. ‘나무 안에 우주가 존재하며 그 세상은 서로 끈끈하게 이어져 있다’는 사실을 작가는 우리에게 알려주고 싶었나 봅니다.

줄기와 가지와 잎사귀가 잘린 나무 그루터기 하나는 볼품이 없지만, 그 속에는 수많은 생명이 피워내는 우주가 꿈틀거립니다. 볼품없는 것들을 볼품없다고 바라보는 순간 정말 그것들은 생명을 잃고 말지요. 전쟁은 그렇게 해서 생겨납니다. 그림책 <나무, 춤춘다>는 허름한 것들을 보듬어 주는 평화입니다.
