STOP! is a series of children's science books created by two brothers, one a wild primate researcher and the other an artist. The brothers grew up in various natural environments, observing nature and raising animals. As adults, they turned their favorite animal stories into illustrated books for children. Volumes 1 through 5 deal with animal behavior, while 6 through 9 cover environmental ecology.

This book begins with the question, "What if we stopped time at the precise moment when a lynx is about to pounce on a rabbit to listen to each side of the story?" What if we could communicate with animals? Wouldn't it be great if we could ask them directly about their strange and weird behavior? These familiar questions we've all had as children are answered in this book. The story begins with Jeanie, a girl with a special ability to communicate with animals. While traveling, Jeanie meets a variety of animals, including a cuckoo, vervet monkey, sea otter, lizard, bluefin tuna, chimpanzee, manatee, reindeer, and polar bear. The animals tell Jeanie about how they live and how changes in the natural environment affect them.

This book uses complete sentences, accessible vocabulary, and humorous illustrations to tell a scientific story. The sophisticated illustrations, verging on a style reminiscent of graphic novels, paint animals in a humorous, yet realistic light, and unfamiliar animals, such as the lynx, moose, and mandrill, are presented together with photographs to grab the attention of children.

With a belief that all life is beautiful, the authors wanted to give a voice to every animal. They wanted to convey how the actions of humans, whether for food or convenience, affect nature and animals. This book provides readers an opportunity to think about what nature and the environment mean to humans and how animals and people can coexist in harmony.
