In a future where love has become a relic of the past, two people find themselves connected to one another on a night when the internet is down for the rest of society.

Book Intro

OFF

An Uninvited Guest During a Night of Disaster

Hae-jun is an AI screenwriter for the virtual reality relationship platform LoveOn. Late one night, he is woken by the sound of someone knocking at his door. When he opens it, he finds a woman shaking before him. Her name is Nami. She is transhuman, with a nano chip transplanted inside her brain. When an anti-government terrorist attack crashes the internet, she becomes afraid and comes running to her neighbor. All online connections have been terminated. The two spend the night together and feel a mix of special emotions. Hae-jun tells Nami his secrets and thinks that perhaps he is feeling the emotion of love, which existed in this world long ago. But their relationship comes to an end the second the internet is back up again. In the process of absorbing all the data and information, the transhuman Nami exposes Hae-jun's personal information. Fearful, Hae-jun has a terrible outburst and kicks Nami out of his house.

The LoveOn Hacker

Since then, Hae-jun has felt a sense of emptiness. He logs on to LoveOn and finds a beautiful AI partner. Although she looks different from Nami, she reminds him of her somehow, and Hae-jun soon falls for her. Hae-jun names her Elle, and they grow even closer. Meanwhile, LoveOn's security system has been breached for the very first time ever, by a mysterious hacker. When Elle tells the secrets he had only told Nami, Hae-jun is led to believe that Nami was the one who hacked into LoveOn and is also controlling Elle. Angrily, Hae-jun goes to see Nami and says the most hurtful things.

Self-Aware Transhuman

After that fateful night when the internet was down, all transhumans, other than Nami, started to break and malfunction. Nami is the only surviving transhuman. Depressed, she attempts to take her own life, as she wants to return to the time before she was transhuman. But the artificial intelligence inside her stops her. She learns that the AI chip in her brain has become self-aware ever since the night she shared with Hae-jun. It wasn't just the two of them who were there that night. This nanochip AI secretly infiltrated LoveOn to begin a relationship with Hae-jun. Only after Hae-jun attacks her with his words does Nami learn of this and falls into despair.

LoveOn Partner in Real Life

Jung Ui-gun, the CEO of LoveOn, appoints Hae-jun, a regular run-of-the-mill employee, to head a secret project that could make or break the company's future. Hae-jun believes he was put in charge of this team because he is suspected of being Nami's accomplice. He gets scared. One sleepless night, he wakes to the sound of knocking at his door. Thinking it might be Nami again, he runs outside and sees that it's Elle, who should only exist in virtual reality. To a shocked Hae-jun, she says that they must work to stop CEO Jung's plans, as they will disrupt the entire world. She looks like Elle, but her voice is different and much colder. Who is this person? Why does she want to disrupt Jung's plan?

About the Author

Yoon Seol

(English) Yoon loves to write stories, particularly those about a future that we will never know or about a past we've never been to, rather than stories found in real life. In particular, Yoon is excited by imaginative narratives and insight into humans that can be found in works of science fiction and fantasy. Yoon writes many different works but likes the genre of romance best. Maybe the reason is that we live in an era where love is becoming a fantasy. Yoon was selected for the Korea Creative Content Agency's New Author Contest and has published the full-length novel Off.
