Book Intro

D People

Children Who Lost Everything at Birth

Fifteen-year-old Zero provides for his family through petty theft. He lives in a dilapidated house in one of the poorest shantytowns in the city, together with One and Two, who are like brothers to him. The other two boys are suffering from severe illnesses, but because they do not have proper birth certificates, they cannot seek help at hospitals. Instead, they manage to get by with the help of Ja-young who comes to visit often and assists them as a mother-like figure.

Then one day, Ja-young goes missing. Two, who had been surviving because of the pills that she would bring, goes into shock. Zero tracks Ja-young down at Seon Medical Complex, where she works. There, he witnesses the death of the woman he had treated as his mother.

Superhumans Created Through Human Greed

The three boys are designer babies that were born out of a failed experiment. They were born with severe genetic defects, but at the same time, they also have extraordinary powers. Zero can read minds when he looks into people's eyes. One is so strong and powerful that he can fight off multiple grown men at once. Two has supernatural hearing abilities. While they were born with genetic disorders, they also have these amazing superpowers. And yet, their lives are being threatened by Dr. Park Sung-ho, who hopes to achieve enormous wealth and power through his genetic engineering skills. He is afraid the public will find out about his failures if they learn about the boys.

All We Want Is One Thing--to Survive

Dr. Park orders his right-hand man Yoon-chul to kill the boys. The boys' lives are at risk. Each time they are cornered, they use their abilities and wits to escape, but the situation only worsens. When Yoon-chul finally corners them and they are about to face death, they're helped by the different support systems that Ja-young put in place before her death. The boys manage to escape. Now it's time for them to fight back, using Ja-young's secret weapon.
