Book Intro

The Painter Ghost's Stationery Shop

High Schooler Running an Unmanned Stationery Shop

After her mother died, Pyo Dan-bi has been living with her father, an office worker. She is starting high school at Sejin High. She works hard and studies hard, relying on the Dan-bi Diaries left behind by her mother. One day, her father announces that he will open an unmanned stationery shop that will help them earn enough money to purchase their old family home. He then goes on to start the business right away, which is unlike his typical indecisive self. But not long after the shop's opening, he has to leave for a long work trip. Dan-bi is asked to run the shop while he's gone, although she herself is busy studying to get into medical school.

A Ghost Offers to Work Part-Time

Late one night, Dan-bi is shocked when she arrives at the shop. While going through security camera footage, she sees how objects and goods appear to be flying around in the air. Later, she is confronted by Hu Hyun, a ghost who claims to have been buried in that exact spot 157 years ago. He shows her his container of drawing accouterments and says he used to work as a court painter for the royal family. With that, he claims he must finish a painting within the next 100 days as he works to recover his memory, and begs Dan-bi to let him work at the shop. Dan-bi, who had become exhausted after not being able to find anyone who could work part-time, agrees to hire the ghost.

Busy Life and Terrible Memories

Dan-bi can't believe she's hired a ghost to work for her, but her life remains as busy as ever. She has to study for tests, for her after-school private institute lessons, her teamwork activities, her extracurricular activities, and run the stationery shop while also staying on top of her part-time employee. She is made even more busy by a kid in school who complicates her life. She tells Hyun about these troubles. Listening to Dan-bi, Hyun grows anxious. What if he can't recover his lost memories in time? Then suddenly, a fragment of memory comes back. It's a painful, sad memory. What happened to him?

How to Say Goodbye to a Loved One

Dan-bi and Hyun's friendship grows deeper by the day. Dan-bi ends up introducing Hyun to her friends; meanwhile, Hyun recovers more of his lost memories. He learns that when he sympathizes and listens to the stories of other kids, it helps with retrieving his memory. Racing against time before the 100-day deadline, Hyun draws closer to unveiling the mystery of his death. It appears he had harbored a secret nobody else knew. This involves Suk-ki, someone he shared a deep friendship. Hyun and Dan-bi soon realize that the reason they met was to help them both learn how to say a proper goodbye to the ones they love.
