Book Intro

We All Shine on Our Own Stars

- Life classes from Lee Kwang-Hyung, who nurtures your dreams.

“Don’t try to be like others. Life is a journey of searching for your own star.”

Lee Kwang-Hyung, futurologist, and president of KAIST, offers a way to turn your dreams of today into the reality of tomorrow.

In life, you encounter a moment when you feel utterly hopeless. How comforting would it be to get advice from a “great elder” who has more life experience than you when you’re at such a difficult moment?

The author earned fame as the godfather of first-generation venture businesses by producing many talented first-generation venture entrepreneurs while working as a professor of computer science at KAIST and has made his dreams come true across various fields, including artificial intelligence, bio information, and futurology. As a person who has proven the power of pursuing one’s dreams by leading many students to realize their dreams and turning his own dreams into reality, the author says in this book: “Every star in the night sky has its own light. As do we. Don’t compare yourself to others or be swept up in competition and just follow your dreams. You shine the most only when you find your own unique light.” What he’s saying is that you can live as a singular star in the night sky if you delve into what you like most and what you can do best. That is why we should follow our dreams regardless of our age. His life philosophy, articulated in 12 subjects, will act as a guidepost for the youth who have yet to find their life’s goal and he also recommends useful guidelines for the older generations who are standing at the inflection point of life.

About the Author

Lee Kwang-Hyung

(English) Lee Kwang-Hyung, President of KAIST, is known by various monikers such as a futurologist who has a calendar 10 years from now on the desk, an eccentric professor who watches TV placed upside down, the godfather of the first-generation venture businesses, and an actual character on the Korean TV drama “KAIST,” but calls himself a person who nurtures people’s dreams.

While working as a professor of computer science at KAIST, Lee earned his nickname, the godfather of the first-generation venture businesses, by producing many talented first-generation venture entrepreneurs, and establishing the new department of bio and brain engineering, the first convergence department at KAIST. Lee has made the unprecedented move of creating a blueprint 10 years into the future, including establishing the Moon Soul Graduate School of Future Strategy. He has served as the 17th president of KAIST since 2021.

Song Ji-Na, writer of the popular SBS drama “KAIST,” describes Lee Kwang-Hyung, who plays himself as an eccentric character in the drama, as “a professor who embraces students who are crazy about something, keeps them being crazed, and even gets crazed with them.” In actuality, he encourages those who are absorbed in what they love to study to become venture entrepreneurs.

With his childhood dream of becoming a scientist like Thomas Edison, he majored in industrial engineering at university and started studying computer science to keep pace with the changes of the world when he was studying abroad. After that, he continued to acquire new knowledge—from artificial intelligence and bio information to futurology. He always stresses that “the size of your dreams determines the size of your life.”

We All Shine on Our Own Stars is a life guide for all young people, offered by an author who has proven through his own life that anyone can make a change if they discover what it is they really want to do. His life philosophy, articulated through 12 subjects, will act as a guidepost for young people who face an uncertain future and he also suggests useful guidelines for older generations who are standing at the inflection point of life.

Lee’s works include the Future of the World, Future Management Based on Three-dimensional Future Forecast, and Three-dimensional Creativity Development Method by Professor Lee Kwang-Hyung. He edits and publishes KAIST Future Strategy, which guides the direction in which Korean society should move ahead every year.

Recommendation

I was instantly attracted to this book the moment I saw the title. It’s because the title is like what I used to say to people. The star is myself as well as my dream. Like the author’s saying, “If you hold a dream, you can see and catch an opportunity,” I believe that this book will support those who chase dreams against the difficulties of reality. - Kim Bong-Jin, Founder of People of Delivery and Chairperson of Woowa Brothers Corporation (2022)

Recently, KAIST has been undergoing revolutionary changes to nurture irreplaceable, creative leaders. It is Lee Kwang-Hyung who is driving these changes. He has taken the most audacious, creative ideas in the world and put those ideas into action throughout his life. This book captures the seeds of his leadership. - Jeong Jae-Seung, brain scientist (2022)

Seeing geese when I visited KAIST really made an impression on me. Learning that it’s an incumbent president who made KAIST such a warm place by inviting the geese as a part of their family, I was even more amazed. This book illustrates the eccentric professor’s life philosophy. I would like to recommend this book for the youth who want to live their own lives. - Im Jeong-wook, Co-president of TBT (2022)
