The journey begins

Seonnomi leaves his family’s Samgae inn and joins a diplomatic mission to the Qing empire. The journey is rough from the start. Park Myeongwon, Yeonam’s boss, is intimidating, and the manservants Jangbok and Changdae keep an awkward distance from him. It had taken him a great deal of courage to leave his home, but Seonnomi feels lonely when he cannot mingle with the others. He suffers from homesickness when a girl, his first love, shows up and gives him advice.

The ferryman of the Yalu River

The rain finally stops after pouring for many days. The group takes boats to cross the Yalu River. By crossing the river, they leave Joseon and enter Qing. Yeonam feels uneasy to be heading toward a strange, unknown land. He strikes up a conversation with the ferryman, who tells him a strange story. His name is Jumae and he left his small, narrow-minded village to become a ferryman. One day, he was rowing a young couple across the river. The woman looked plain and ordinary, but the man seemed eerie for some reason, dressed in black from head to toe. Jumae rowed in silence when the man told him to stop halfway across the river. The corpse of a woman was drifting down in the distance. She seemed to have drowned in the river. As the corpse came closer, the young woman gasped. Jumae glanced at what she was staring at. The woman’s corpse looked almost identical to the woman in the boat.

The curse of the red silk

The group reached Shenyang after an exhausting journey. They arrive at their inn and enjoy a hard-earned rest when an old man over eighty asks to meet the envoy from Joseon. He was born and raised in Qing, but he is a descendant of the Joseon people who had been taken as hostages. 

The man is granted an interview with Yeonam and Park Myeongwon, during which he pulls out a carefully sewn pair of socks, made by his great-grandmother. He asks them to make an offering of those socks at Crown Princess Minhoe’s grave, saying it was his grandmother’s dying wish. The Crown Princess was the wife of Crown Prince Sohyeon, and the couple had been forced to stay in Qing as hostages. When they finally returned to Joseon, the Prince’s father, King Injo, had them killed.

The ambassador asks the reason for the strange request, and the old man explains that Hyang, his great-grandmother, suffered from guilt that it was her fault Crown Princess Minhoe had been killed.

Hwapi

Yeonam’s curiosity is as insatiable as ever in Qing. He slips out of the inn with Seonnomi and Hong Myeongbok, their interpreter. They meet a group of Chinese scholars and listen to a man called An Xueliang tell a strange story his grandfather, An Ping, had told him.

An Ping was a portrait painter. One night, a beautiful woman named Wu Yen asked him to come to her house to paint her portrait. When he entered her mountain villa, however, he found out that Wu Yen was actually Hwapi, a monster who could change her face at will. Hwapi ordered An Ping to draw a face on a piece of skin hung up on her wall—a man’s face that looked as ordinary and inconspicuous as possible. 

*모험의 시작**

선노미는 가족들이 머무르는 삼개주막을 떠나 드디어 청나라 사행길에 오른다. 하지만 시작이 순탄하지만은 않다. 연암 나리의 상전인 정사 어르신은 어렵기만 하고, 하인 장복과 창대는 어쩐지 선노미를 서먹하게 대한다. 큰맘 먹고 집을 떠나왔는데 무리에 섞이지 못해 외로움과 고립감을 느끼는 선노미. 향수병으로 힘들어하는 선노미에게 ‘첫사랑’ 소녀가 나타나 조언을 해주는데…….

*압록강 뱃사공**

오랫동안 퍼붓던 비가 그쳐서 일행은 배를 타고 압록강을 건넌다. 강을 건너면 드디어 조선을 떠나 청나라 초입으로 들어가게 된다. 미지의 세계로 향한다는 불안감을 느끼던 연암은 노 젓는 사공에게 말을 걸고, 그것을 계기로 강 이쪽 세상과 저쪽 세상을 연결해 주는 사공 주매에게서 기이한 이야기를 듣게 된다.

작고 폐쇄적인 고향 마을을 떠나 뱃사공이 된 주매는 어느 날 한 쌍의 남녀를 배에 태우게 된다. 외모가 평범한 여자와 머리끝부터 발끝까지 온통 검은색으로 차려입은, 어딘지 모르게 오싹한 젊은 남자. 침묵 속에서 배를 젓던 주매는 남자의 지시로 강 한가운데서 배를 멈춘다. 저만치서 여자의 시신이 떠내려오고 있다. 아마도 강에 빠져 죽은 사람인 모양이다. 시신이 점차 배 가까이 다가오자, 배 안에 타고 있던 여자가 놀라 숨을 들이켠다. 주매는 여자의 시선이 좇는 곳을 따라간다. 물 위에 떠 있는 여자의 시신은 배 안에 타고 있는 여자와 똑같은 모습을 하고 있었다.

*붉은 비단의 저주**

사절단 일행은 온갖 고생 끝에 청나라 심양에 도착한다. 숙소에 도착해 여독을 풀고 있는데, 여든이 넘은 노인 하나가 찾아와 조선인 사신들을 뵙기를 청한다. 청에서 태어나 평생을 살았다는 노인은 오래전 청나라에 끌려온 조선인 인질들의 후예였다.

박명원과 연암을 대면한 노인은 품 안에서 정성 들여 지은 버선 한 켤레를 꺼낸다. 그의 증조할머니가 손수 지었다는 버선이다. 그는 증조할머니의 유언이라며 그 버선을 130여 년 세상을 떠난 민회빈의 무덤에 바쳐달라고 간청한다. 민회빈은 청나라에 인질로 끌려온 소현세자의 아내로, 조선에 돌아간 지 얼마 되지 않아 시아버지인 인조의 손에 의해 죽임을 당했다.

어째서 이 버선을 바치려 하느냐는 사절단의 물음에 노인은 자신의 증조할머니 향이 민회빈을 죽였다는 죄책감에 괴로워했다고 고한다.

*화피(畵皮)**

청나라에서도 연암의 호기심은 끊일 줄을 모른다. 한밤중 선노미, 역관 홍명복과 함께 숙소를 빠져나온 그는 청나라 서생들과 만나 그들 중 한 명인 안쉐량의 할아버지 안핑이 겪었다는 기이한 이야기를 듣게 된다.

초상화가였던 안핑은 어느 날 밤 자신을 찾아와 그림을 그려달라는 절세미녀 우옌의 요청에 따라 그녀가 사는 산속 저택을 찾아간다. 하지만 사람인 줄 알았던 우옌의 정체는 자유자재로 얼굴을 갈아끼는 괴담 속의 요괴 화피였다. 화피는 안핑에게 벽에 걸린 가죽에 사람의 얼굴을 그리라고 명령한다. 가능한 평범하고 눈에 띄지 않는 남자로.
