“There must never be any kind of problem in our class!”

Mr. Ban Steele, who chews on metal every time he’s in a bad mood, is a perfectionist who thinks there should never be any kind of problem in his class. So there’s no way he would pay attention to the special circumstances of students like Changsu, who is sluggish; Eunho, who is falsely accused of stealing; and Chaeyun, who lies all the time. He only wishes that they would stop creating more problems and be obedient. The children’s guardians, who have appeared for consultations, are busy making excuses for the children. But these excuses are ridiculous and absurd, and Mr. Ban is driven to the point of exploding because of these rude and strange visitors who have suddenly appeared.

Unique characters keep appearing in each meeting, and an exciting story unravels at breathtaking speed. The consultations, which begin because of some problem involving the children, actually give children wings to let their imaginations fly, thanks to the surprising and preposterous defenses. Although the children only appear in the conversations between the adults in the meeting, their voices and feelings can be heard vividly.

Mr. Ban Steele only has a change of mind after his first students from two decades ago visit him, and he finally throws up all the metal pieces he has swallowed so far. He shows that grown-ups are not all perfect and that adults continue to grow and mature, just as children do.

The stories of Gim Nobread, who becomes a baker after a compliment from the teacher, and Jinhee, who returns as a real chicken after being called a chicken head, may make adults who compare and judge children feel guilty, but the book entertains readers with humor and wit.

*“우리 반에선 절대 아무 문제도 생겨선 안 돼!”**

기분이 나쁠 때마다 쇠를 오독오독 씹어 먹는 금지철 선생님은 교실에서는 어떠한 ‘문제’도 생기면 안 된다고 생각하는 완벽주의자다. 그러니 행동이 느린 창수, 도둑 누명을 쓴 은호, 거짓말하는 채윤이 같은 학생들의 특별한 사정 따위에 관심을 둘 리 없다. 그저 그들이 더 이상 문제를 일으키지 않고 고분고분해지기를 바랄 뿐이다. 상담 시간에 나타난 아이들의 보호자들은 아이들을 위해 적극 해명에 나선다. 그러나 이 해명이라는 것이 황당하고 엉뚱하기 그지없는 데다 불쑥 나타난 ‘버릇없는 낯선 방문자들’로 인해 선생님은 거의 폭발 직전에 이른다.

매 상담마다 개성 넘치는 인물들이 계속 등장해 이야기는 숨 쉴 틈 없이 흥미진진하게 펼쳐진다. 어린이들의 어떤 문제적 상황이 매개가 돼 시작된 상담은 황당하고 엉뚱한 변호들 덕분에 오히려 아이들의 상상력에 날개를 달아 준다. 어린이들은 상담하는 어른들의 대화 속에만 등장함에도 어린이들의 목소리와 마음이 굉장히 선명하게 부각되고 잘 들린다.

20년 전 만났던 첫 제자들이 찾아오고 나서야 마음의 변화를 느끼고 그동안 삼켰던 쇳조각을 모두 게워 내는 금지철 선생님의 모습은 어른이라고 다 완벽하지 않다는 사실, 어른도 어린이처럼 계속해 성장해 나간다는 사실을 넌지시 알려 준다.

선생님의 칭찬을 받고 빵집 주인이 된 김빵점, 닭대가리라고 놀림 받다가 정말 닭대가리가 되어 찾아온 진희의 이야기는 아이들을 비교 평가하는 어른들에겐 뜨끔할 대목이지만 읽는 내내 유머와 재치가 있어 즐거움을 선사한다.
