In Web Fiction Curation: Romance, Romance Fantasy, and LGBTQ, the second volume of the Web Fiction Curation series, Son Jin-Won -- a pop culture researcher and romance fantasy web fiction writer -- and Bookwitch -- a web fiction editor and YouTuber -- provide an overview of the genre and feature select romance, romance fantasy, and LGBTQ works. This volume discusses the characteristics and history of each genre, introduces leading works, and guides both novice and well-seasoned readers of female web fiction.
Romance, romance fantasy, and LGBTQ genres are often grouped together as "web fiction for women," but each genre has its unique characteristics. Romance started with the Harlequin Romance template that satisfied readers' fantasies. This gradually evolved with non-traditional male protagonists. On the other hand, romance fantasy takes place in an alternate reality and adopts heroins who protest against the femininity defined by Korean society. The LGBTQ genre, which was criticized for homosexual contents, has established itself as a leading web fiction genre as it merged with mystery and occult genres and adopted sub-culture worldviews or online games.
