Book Intro

(English) Gui In Byeol the King’s Warrior

*One summer day at Pyeomwoosa**

Hyo-Myeong is the intelligent, beautiful crown prince of Joseon. He tries to control the Andong Kim clan, his powerful maternal relatives, and pursue political reform. Sensing a crisis, Kim Jwa-Geun, the leader of the Andong Kim clan, conspires to kill Hyo-Myeong by poison.

Yun Yeon-Shim, a court lady, is in a one-sided love affair with Hyo-Myeong. She happens to know about Kim Jwa-Geun’s conspiracy and reveals it to Hyo-Myeong, at her peril. In the meantime, the crown prince re-investigates the secret death by poison of the previous king. Hyo-Myeong hands over a clue that could solve the mystery of the former king’s death to Yeon-Shim who is pursued by Kim Jwa-Geun. Jwa-Geun has his royal bodyguard Park Shi-Myeong help Yeon-Shim escape. However, during her escape, Park Shi-Myeong falls off a cliff while fighting with Kim Jwa-Geun’s warrior. After that, Crown Prince Hyo-Myeong abruptly passes away.

*Parting of lovers**

Won-Beom, a member of the royal family, lives in exile after his elder brother was executed after being accused of treason. Although he lives alone in hardship, he manages his life quite well. This is because he has good neighbors and friends, a good teacher, and Byeol.

“Won-Beom, I am your one and only love forever, right?”

Before Won-Beom replies, Ganghwa Yusu, a government official, suddenly delivers an order from the king outside the room.

“Don’t move a muscle and quietly wait for the next order.”

Won-Beom thinks, “Ah, I too may be executed at last.”

*New love**

Won-Beom becomes the king of Joseon, but after the passage of time, he is nothing less than a vulnerable, powerless figurehead under the power of his maternal grandmother.

One day, Won-Beom wanders around town in disguise to see how ordinary people live, and happens to meet a woman. She saves him from danger as she yields a sword, declaring, “There’s nothing a woman cannot do” and confesses to him, “I’m interested in you, very much!”. Won-Beom is attracted to the woman who looks like Byeol, and has feelings for her that he can’t explain

*Female warrior who protects the king**

Byeol meets Won-Beom again and enters the palace as a court lady. However, after brief happy moments, Byeol faces a crisis of death. Knowing that she cannot live as Won-Beom’s mistress, she is determined to become his servant to protect him. Meanwhile, Won-Beom is determined to expel the Andong Kim clan. He carries out reform policies against the Andong Kim clan, while examining the truth behind Park Shi-Myeong, Yun Yeon-Shim, and Byeol (he doesn’t know that Byeol is alive, as a warrior for the king). The Andong Kim clan sense their position is faltering by the fierce efforts of the king and Byeol, and thus devise a scheme to get rid of King Won-Beom. Byeol and Won-Beom are plunged into the crisis of a lifetime.
