Overview

This book delves into the truth behind the “Hymn of Death” syndrome, the most dramatic scandal in the history of Korean popular music.

Book Intro

(English) Symphony of Life

*Love affair in the Korea Straits and Hymn of Death**

In the dawn of August 4, 1926, it was reported that singer Yun Sim-Deok and Kim Woo-Jin died by suicide together, jumping into the sea. The shocking news swept through Gyeongseong, present-day Seoul. Nam Sang-Cheol, a reporter from the Dong-A Ilbo goes into a frenzy at the news, thinking that Sim-Deok would never be the kind of person to kill herself. Having lost the woman he had once been in unrequited love with, Sang-Cheol can’t acknowledge her death and tries to track down her last moves, only to become even more in limbo. Meanwhile, he hears the news that Hymn of Death, the last album recorded by Yun Sim-Deok right before her death is getting released. Sim-Deok’s posthumous album is a record breaker and gramophones sell out, boosted by the extraordinary scandal.

*After all the belief collapses**

Sang-Cheol becomes confused, realizing that there were many aspects of Sim-Deok’s life that he didn’t know. He is suspicious  about her credits as the lyricist but cannot find any clear clues. However, when reading Kim Woo-Jin’s note handed to him by Jeom-Hyo, Woo-Jin’s wife, his belief that Sim-Deok didn’t commit suicide falls apart. After a while, Sang-Cheol heads for Osaka, where Ildong Records, the company that released Hymn of Death, is located, to face Sim-Deok’s last moments. In the city, he comes across a mysterious man named Maeda Tetsu.

*A grand scheme that results in the difference between life and death**

During his time at Cheongsan School, Tetsu, then a literature student, fell in love with Yun Sim-Deok, who entered the school as an exchange student on a government scholarship. Tetsu considered Sim-Deok as his other half. But Sim-Deok didn’t feel the same. She couldn’t live only as someone’s partner. Their seemingly endless love ended when Sim-Deok made her way into the broader world. As a talented singer, she became everyone’s sweetheart. Plunged into despair after their relationship ended, Tetsu gave up his dream of becoming an artist. Later, he conceives a grand scheme that could result in the difference between life and death, bringing back the memory of having watched the Kanto Massacre.

*Hymn of life and death song**

The year 1923 was the year of Yun Sim-Deok. People paid attention to the modern girl who claimed herself as an Agapemonite, and her popularity sold out concerts. However, the public’s fervent interest in her eventually faded. The public wasn’t tolerant enough to maintain their interest in difficult classical music. Sim-Deok was economically distressed and couldn’t regain her tainted reputation. Under such circumstances, Tetsu approached her and suggested recording the album that became Hymn of Death. He suggested she fake her own death to make the album a big success. Left without options, she accepts his plan in the hope that she’ll have one last chance of soaring again, without knowing the ulterior motives of his scheme.
