Park Youngran is an author of the following books: Feel Like Going to a Convenience Store about the lonely and poor characters and Guesthouse Q that brings together as one, individuals who are a bit strange, thereby captivating her readers with her unique space. Her new book opens the gate to a two-story house. The House of Myself, with an intriguing title tells the story of seventeen-year-old who became the house owner of this old house and how she goes through crisis and hardship to come of age. In the author’s unadorned and lingering writing style, a youth’s struggle to keep order amid the heightening fear and anxiety is unfolded.
Gyeong-ju who lost her parents at an early age and lived with her grandparents. But when they too die, she is left alone in a two-story house she inherits at age seventeen. She is determined to guard the house with all her memories of her life. But her uncle is the first of many to pay her a visit with the intent to sell the house for his gain. Will Gyeong-ju be able to keep the house with all the pressure, threats, and persuasion by the grown-ups? The adults who are making attempts to get rid of the house intimidate her by saying, “You’re a child; you don’t know anything.” But the children try to understand them by looking into background stories. In an arena, where everyone’s wills and desires clash, the book shows, how the protagonist establishes her rights while enduring the fear and tears and learns about the world.

タイトルからして好奇心を刺激する『私で作った家』は、古い二階建ての家を背景に17歳で家主となった子供が経験する危機と苦難、成長が描かれた作品だ。両親が早くに亡くなり、祖父と祖母に育てられたキョンジュはその二人も亡くなると、一人二階建ての家に残る。17で家を遺産として受け継ぎ、主人になったキョンジュは祖父と祖母、自分の秩序が溶け込んだ家を守ろうと決意する。しかし叔父を筆頭に家族たちは家を売り、分け前を頂戴するつもりでキョンジュを訪ねてくる。大人たちの説得と回避、脅迫の中でもしっかりと耐えるキョンジュは最後まで自分の家を守ることができるのだろうか?

Park Young-ran
(English) Born in the city of Youngyang in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, she moved to Seoul at the age twelve. She completed the Creative Writing program at the Chung-ang Graduate School of Art. She is the author of Tale of Laguna and Others, a collection of short stories, Shush, Quietly (Revised version of My Lonely Durian Tree), Be Nice to Yeong-wu, Seoul Station, The Expansion of Mean Spirit, Feel Like Going to a Convenience Store, Guesthouse Q, With an Affectionate Heart, Fake Human, all full-length novels, and The Secret of a Rooftop Garden, a children’s book. Her novels belong to the realm of the heart.
