Overview

A gift-like book on precious relationships and beautiful memories

Book Intro

"The story of my seventh yellow bench, which brought me a special neighbor and a precious friend on a brilliant and beautiful summer’s day.

A heart-warming story of Jihu, still sad from his grandmother’s death, and how he heals the wounds in his heart by building new relationships at the seventh yellow bench in the neighborhood park.

That day, Jihu was sitting by himself on the seventh yellow bench, where he had used to sit with his grandmother last summer. From some distance away, a white dog resembling a pirate captain jumped and flew towards him, as if riding the wind, and stopped in front of Jihu—with laughter all over its body. That’s how Jihu met Bongsu and Haena and the old man. They squeezed onto the seventh yellow bench and, sitting side by side, gazed at the landscape.

One day, Jihu happens to see a flyer with a picture of a dog that looks exactly like Bongsu and the words “Missing, Shiri. Our child is anxiously looking for the dog,” below. As if he was carrying a heavy weight in his heart, Jihu is so shaken by worries like, “What if Bongsu is Shiri? What if it’s not the old man’s dog? Is Bongsu going to leave me too?” that he feels nauseous. In the end, Jihu stands up to a mean dog breeder. Trembling, he shouts in a loud voice that Bongsu is Shiri and bravely protects someone precious to him. Familiar faces, but faces Jihu does not know, who were taking a walk in the park, also stand next to brave Jihu and support him.

The adults who appear in the story as minor characters are not completely good or mature adults. The chihuahua lady who tried to leave without cleaning up after her dog, the man in the black hat who just quickly passed by without a thank you after receiving the money he had dropped, the woman on the eighteenth floor who makes Jihu feel small whenever they meet in the elevator. These characters make the story realistic. Later the book reveals the story of why and how the man in the black hat became reluctant to speak, and how the woman on the eighteenth floor was the best teacher, second to none, to Haena, slightly hinting at the often forgotten fact that no one has only one side to their selves.

A landscape different from the past will spread out before Jihu, now that he has bravely marched through the pain of loss, but the strong power of continuing your humble daily life with someone beside you will remain unchanged."
