* No One Can Beat Me Running. Then, My Archrival Appeared! **
Hyunsoo no longer considers Hankyul to be his friend because they are planning to race to determine the fastest runner in their class. Hyunsoo even becomes jealous when the teacher compliments Hankyul for answering correctly in class and he doesn’t want to play soccer with Hankyul after school anymore. Hyunsoo’s hostile feelings lead him to think of Hankyul as an enemy, not his friend.
Obsessed with winning, Hyunsoo soon faces a crisis. When Hankyul stays with him during a difficult time, Hyunsoo realizes what a precious friend Hankyul is. Eventually, Hyunsoo discovers the pure joy of running with his friend and overcomes his obsession with winning. Hyunsoo runs even more happily than ever.
* A Sweet and Lovely Story of the First Graders **
School is a mysterious, fascinating yet unfamiliar and scary place to first graders. This story deftly captures the emotions and behaviors of first graders in school. Hyunsoo feels competitive against his friend, Hankyul, and the author delicately describes Hyunsoo’s change of mind in a way that resonates with readers as the story unfolds.
All the first grade characters—not only Hyunsoo and Hankyul but also their classmates—have unique personalities. Intrigued by the competition, they enthusiastically cheer for either Hyunsoo or Hankyul. Even without many dialogues, these sub-characters tell their own stories through lively facial expressions and movements in the pictures. The relationship of both main characters and various sub-characters makes the story more captivating and relatable.
