Overview

A book of photographs and essays about the growth period of Fu Bao, a baby panda at Everland Zoo

Book Intro

The book starts out with a narration by Gang Cheolwon, a zookeeper at Everland Zoo, also known as Grandpa Panda. Fu Bao, the Baby Panda, isn’t just a book of photographs depicting the ecology of giant pandas—it discusses the baby panda’s growth with warmth and affection. It gives a look into the great efforts made by the zookeepers to keep giant pandas, which are classed as an endangered species, alive.

Gang Cheolwon, the zookeeper who stays close to Fu Bao like a mother, has been with the baby panda, who weighed just 197 grams at birth, as she grew up to weigh over 30 kilograms. As he talks about Fu Bao, he sounds as loving and affectionate as a grandfather talking about his granddaughter. The way they love and care for each other as equal creatures of nature, communicating with their eyes and hearts, has touched the hearts of many.

Ryu Jeonghun, the photographer, who has worked for Everland’s public relations team for years, has captured the life of the baby panda in detail since her birth, at times with an objective eye, and at times full of feeling. His photographs of Fu Bao give a close look into the daily life of a baby panda.

About the Author

Everland Zoo

(English) Since opening in 1976, Everland Zoo has served as an ecological education center where countless people have been impressed and touched by communing with animals. This zoo features Lost Valley and Safari World, where visitors can see herbivores such as giraffes and elephants and carnivores such as lions and tigers, while riding in an expeditionary vehicle. At Panda World, you can see giant pandas and lesser pandas, which are endangered species. There’s also the Albert Space Center, Tiger Valley, and Ppuppa Town. Zookeepers at Everland Zoo are devoted to taking good care of the animals for their health and well-being.

Everland Zoo was registered as the first Asian regular member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums in 2019. The zoo continuously works hard to improve breeding technologies and maintain a zoo environment that keeps both animals and humans happy. Everland Zoo hopes that this book will provide ecological information on animals and let readers into the ordinary lives of animals and zookeepers, who build friendships at the zoo.
