Book Intro

(English) The Bull of Guernica

When 11 years old Kate Burnham first lays her eyes on by Pablo Picasso during her family vacation, she is instantly captivated by the art. Though she does not have much memories of her childhood, according to her stepfather Carl Burnham, she is a survivor of a brutal attack by her own mother, who murdered her husband and also tried to kill Kate. Carl Burnham adopted Kate, after Kate’s mother was confined at Carl’s mental hospital. Fascinated by Kate’s intense admiration towards the painting, Carl gifts her a replica of for her birthday, and Kate becomes even more obsessed with the painting. One day, Kate sees an illusion of the Bull from the painting attacking her. Waking up from the attack with discharge of blood, Kate is afraid that she might develop the same mental illness as her mother, and Carl Burnham prescribes her with medication. However, her obsession towards the painting continues, and wanting to see the Bull again, Kate stops taking the medication and soon experiences a severe seizure, which causes her to end up in the mental hospital for 6 months at age of 17.

  Three years later, Kate now works as an art therapist at Carl’s hospital while continuing her work as an artist. However she finds it difficult to draw what she really wants, and withdraws from her medications again. In her dreams Kate meets a girl named Erin, hidden inside her father’s hospital. There, Erin paints unbelievable work of art. Kate decides to steal Erin’s paintings through lucid dream, and from then on, Kate becomes the new star in the New York art world. Nevertheless, as she continues to steal and draw Erin’s paintings, the boundary between dream and real life starts to fade, and Kate fears whether she is going mad. The more famous Kate becomes, the more Kate tries to hide Erin, and now she is caught in between reality and dream. Kate finds a maid named Susan to look after Erin, but when Erin finds out that Kate has been contacting Carl Burnham, Erin is furious and says that she will leave. Amidst their quarrel, Erin kills Susan and runs away, and Kate is left in shock as she finally realizes that all the things that seemed like her dream might actually be real.

韓国系アメリカ人のケイトは、養父で精神病院の院長であるカールから、母親が夫を殺し、彼女も殺そうとした話を聞いて育ち、自分も殺人者になることを恐れている。幼い頃、ピカソの「ゲルニカ」に魅了され画家を夢見るが、絵から「雄牛」が飛び出してきて自分を襲う幻覚を見て薬を飲むようになる。 大人になったケイトの現実と夢の境界が曖昧になる中、ケイトは夢の中でエリンという女性が描いた傑作を目にする。エリックの絵を現実で実現するためにエリンと取引をするが、ある日、エリンは殺人を犯して逃げ出し、ケイトは今まで夢だと信じていたことがすべて現実だったかもしれないことに気づく。
