The wonders and fantastic worldview of science fiction are delicately portrayed in this collection, including a vampire incident in the late Joseon Dynasty, a plasma ritual dream over a star's surface, people in an anti-religious world who believe only in the present, and the story of constructing another planet's ecosystem in the sky of a strange alien planet. Armed with three-dimensional narratives and meticulous logic that traverses genre, as well as dynamic dialogue that realizes nonexistent worlds, each story leaves a deep philosophical impression beyond the intellectual pleasure that can be felt from recent Netflix sci-fi series.
"The King’s Soul"
In this world, the Vatican and its divine science hold global domination. Joseon, which had maintained its dynasty, beheads the king to complete a secular revolution, but it's not enough. They ask for the help of Vatican theologians, who arrive at Hanyang's laboratory in midst of a snowstorm. The novel portrays the quirky atmosphere of alternative history with a fantastic description.
"Escape of Gamalock"
Alien monsters fight in an arena like ancient gladiators. Humans manipulate the monsters' habits of bringing round things into their nests to create a game called "Ganok."
Six monsters are released in a stadium, and a ball is dropped from the sky; the monsters then bite each other and fight over the ball. One day a monster escapes, after which some officers witness its mysterious behavior. Is pure tenacity for the impossible only a human trait?
“Speak to the Dead."
A funeral ceremony is held for a child, who'd barely turned seven years old, on an alien planet with a beautiful archipelago. The body of the child is dressed in seaweed and covered in fish essence before being pushed down to the sea. On this planet, civilization was destroyed by nuclear war a thousand years ago. Survivors follow an "anti-religious" religion that only believes in life and the present. Then one day, people arrive to develop travel packages on the ruins of this planet.
