We who met in this world, where we had no desire to be, talk about our exteriors

Achimdalbooks Poetry Series No.9 is the fifth anthology of poems by Kim Soyeon who is known for her cool yet poignant writing. In this book, the poet looks back on the bygone days and reveals her innermost thoughts. She unravels the stories of the good times she spent “in this world where we had no desire to be.” Yu Hui-gyeong, who wrote the Afterword, states the poet has written about what could be considered mild in a very pointed way. 

The sense of being alone felt from your absence and the lack of an arm pillow

The words that feel close yet remote, “In this world where we had no desire to be,” are placed between our beginning and end. Albeit hiding our expression but wanting to be close with the time of which we want to support each other, all this is unraveled. 

We encounter all kinds of fears in life. The fear of the world, fear of being left alone, fear of growing up, fear of being discriminated against, fear of confronting the truth, and fear of threats to our survival… In some respect, living life in itself is all about fear. 

In this collection of poems by Kim Soyeon, there often appear many words and images that are reminiscent of fear, terror, and death. The cognizance of these horrific factors are interlocked with the poet’s uniquely cool and even-tempered voice and they are subsequently transformed to more terrifying things. But the poet is perhaps not afraid of them and does not evade these fears; instead she confronts them straight on. In that respect, she is a poet with bold aesthetics who can unearth beauty in the horrific. 

한 번도 원한 적 없는 이 세계에서 만난 우리의 바깥을 이야기하다

아침달 시집 시리즈 9번. 서늘하면서도 애틋한 언어로 시를 써온 김소연의 다섯 번째 시집이다. 이번 시집에서 김소연은 지난 시절을 되돌아보며, 마음속에 쌓여 있던 말들을 전한다. 우리가 ""한 번도 원한 적 없는 이 세계에서"" 보낸, 좋았던 시간들에 관한 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 발문을 쓴 유희경 시인은 이 시집에 관해 “순한 말을 참 날카롭게도 벼려 놓았”다고 말한다.

없는 당신의, 없는 팔베개 속에서 느껴지는 혼자라는 감각

가깝고도 먼 간격을 가진 단어들이 “한 번도 원한 적 없는 이 세계에서” 시작된 우리의 처음과 끝 사이에 놓인다. 표정은 숨기면서도 곁에는 있고 싶어 서로의 뒤쪽에 있으려 하는 우리의 시간들이 펼쳐진다.

살아가면서 우리는 온갖 두려움과 맞닥뜨린다. 세상에 대한 두려움, 혼자가 되는 두려움, 성장에 대한 두려움, 차별에 대한 두려움, 진실을 마주하는 두려움, 생존 위협에 따른 두려움… 어떻게 보면 살아가는 일이 두려움 그 자체라고도 할 수 있다.

김소연의 이번 시집에는 두려움, 공포와 죽음을 환기하는 말과 이미지들이 자주 등장한다. 그러한 끔찍함에 대한 인식들은 김소연 특유의 담담하면서도 서늘한 목소리와 맞물려 한층 더 무서운 것들로 변모한다. 하지만 한편 김소연은 그러한 두려움들을 피하거나 진정으로 두려워하지 않고 정면으로 응시하고 있는 것인지도 모른다. 그러한 의미에서 김소연은 무서운 것들로부터 아름다움을 발견해내는 귀한 미감을 가진 시인이다.
