One day, the sun comes to the baby tree. When the sun says, “Hi!” something magical happens. Pop! The tree grows. The sun comes a little closer and looks into the eyes of the tree and again greets him, “Hi!” Whoosh! The tree grows another foot. The sun and the baby tree reach out to each other. The two hold hands and begin to walk. When they climb the steep staircase they come across, when the tree turns his head from side to side, not knowing which way to go; when they carefully pass a high, dangerous place, the sun cheers the tired tree on in a loving voice and encourages him to try. Then one day, the sun’s body begins to melt in the dripping rain and eventually disappears into the darkness, leaving behind only the baby tree. When the day becomes bright again after a long time has passed, the baby tree is sad because he cannot see the sun. Just then, the baby tree hears the voice of the sun! “You grew and became stronger when we were together. I am always with you.” The baby tree has become the tallest tree in the village, and the sun shines a warm ray of light from behind the tree.

어느 날 해가 아기 나무를 찾아옵니다. “안녕!” 해가 인사를 건네자 마법 같은 일이 벌어집니다. 슈웅! 하고 나무의 키가 자란 것입니다. 해는 조금 더 가까이 다가와 나무와 눈을 맞추고 다시 한번 인사합니다. “안녕!” 슈우웅! 나무의 키가 한뼘 더 자랐습니다. 해와 아기 나무는 서로를 향해 손을 뻗습니다. 그리고 두 손을 마주 잡고 길을 걷기 시작하지요. 길을 걷다 마주한 가파른 계단을 오를 때에도, 두리번두리번 어디로 가야할지 망설여질 때에도, 아슬아슬 높고 위험한 곳을 지날 때에도 해는 따스한 목소리로 지친 나무를 격려하고 다독이며 다시 힘을 낼 수 있게 도와줍니다. 그러던 어느 날, 주르륵 내리는 비에 해의 몸이 녹기 시작하고, 결국 아기 나무만 남긴 채 해는 어둠 속으로 사라져 버립니다. 많은 시간이 흐른 뒤 다시 날이 밝았을 때에도 아기 나무는 해를 볼 수 없어 슬픔에 빠지지요. 그때 아기 나무 귀에 들려오는 해의 목소리! “우리가 함께하는 동안 넌 이만큼 자랐구나. 나는 항상 네 곁에 있단다.” 어느 새 마을에서 가장 큰 나무가 된 아기 나무. 해는 나무 뒤를 따스하게 비추고 있습니다.
