Overview

This is a picture book that recreated the song by the duo, Okdal, A Goat for 40,000 Won that was campaign song to send the gift of goats to African countries.

Book Intro

Since its release, A Goat for 40,000 Won, has captivated many people with its lively rhythm and meaningful message. The children especially loved this song for it was easy to sing along but also because it was sung a lot in elementary schools. Thanks to the message that a single goat could change the lives of African children, it was widely used as an educational material for the donation to the world citizens.

The picture book, A Goat for 40,000 Won presents an affective collaboration of the independent music band, Okdal and illustrator, Jo Weon-hui, who received a special mention for the Ragazzi Award at the Bologna Children’s Book Festival. The cheerful, energetic, and intuitive feel of the song is well integrated with the distinctive drawings of the illustrator that resulted in a remarkable work of art.

In the book, the protagonists are two children, one living in South Korea and the other somewhere in Africa. The life of a Korean child is quite ordinary. He plays ball games in the school field, eats at school, goes shopping with his mom and takes walks with his dad. Then an overlapping life of an African child is shown. A child carrying his younger sibling on his back is gazing at a person with a goat. Then one day, he is given a goat. From the left to the right page, a goat that is tied on a red string and delivered to the child like a magical gift resembles the warm and open hearts of children who extend their hands to a friend. The younger brother who discovers the goat first gives a big smile. With the goat, the life of the family changes. The children’s lives are altered as well. Instead of carrying a pail of water, they are able to attend school. They happily race toward their school. Their faces are now radiantly lit with a smile.

The overall mood of the book is lively and cheerful, just like the song. The illustrator tried to capture the sense of the song’s rhythm in her drawings. She contrasted the daily life of a Korean child and that of the African child by expressing them in different methods and color. The African people and the goat are described in a fun and vivid manner, singing and dancing. The bold and sensual style of the illustrator is once more shown in the best light in this book.
