Book Intro

The Essential Editions, an extraordinary series planned jointly by Minumsa and Kyobo Book Center, feature the most well-known works of fiction by the most renowned authors in the world, along with their most beloved essays.

Any reader who comes across these volumes will see the definitive curated book that well defines the author's singular characteristics captured in one sentence. The first of these editions features George Orwell, who has been written about in the media due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The concept of Big Brother, referring to the absolute power and surveillance wielded by the state, is Orwell's own invention and a major part of 1984. In the book, Orwell describes how cutting-edge technology can be used as a means of surveillance and censorship, and that a surveillance society manifests itself at a time when citizens begin to value safety over freedom, especially during times of war, disease, and other crises. The Essential George Orwell includes 1984 along with seven essays where Orwell discusses the issue of freedom and happiness along with an in-depth look at the principles of political writing. This book will be a turning point for all readers to come to the realization that we must not let 1984 become a reality, as that is up to us.

Hwang Ilsun, the designer who oversaw the book design for The Essential George Orwell, attempted a contemporary recreation of the classical author with the use of a portrait instead of photographs. By collaborating with the portraiture artist Chung Joongwon, Hwang realized her vision. The resulting hyperrealistic portrait portrays the characteristics of George Orwell (2020) not in an artificially exaggerated way but in a manner that gives human expression to the author's face. This visual representation clearly demonstrates Orwell as the forthright, honest writer that he is. The team gave extra thought to the inlay designs as well. By choosing a typeface with a harmonious balance for both hangul and English, the pages run naturally without hindering readability, even when the Korean and English are written side by side. The paragraphs do not line up in a consistent, structured block, which gives a more natural, flowing effect that is evocative of the author's own penstrokes.

About the Author

GEORGE ORWELL

Eric Arthur Blair was born to a public servant working in the British embassy in India, on June 25, 1903. After graduating from Eton, Blair gave up on going to university and instead worked as a police officer in the British colony of Myanmar for five years beginning in 1922. In time, he became disillusioned at the thought that he was part of the imperial forces and submitted his resignation. Wary of totalitarianism, George Orwell fought in the Spanish Civil War. He wrote about his experiences in Homage to Catalonia which was praised as a remarkable work of documentary literature. In 1945, just after the Second World War, Orwell published Animal Farm, an allegory of the Russian Revolution and Stalin's betrayal, which brought him enormous fame. However, that same year, his wife suddenly passed away, and Orwell himself suffered from worsening symptoms of tuberculosis and ended up hospitalized. Even so, he continued to write, eventually publishing the dystopian novel 1984, describing the horrors of a totalitarian society. 1984 transformed Orwell into the most influential author of the 20th century, but he himself succumbed to his long illness and died in 1950 at the age of 47.
