<NEWTON’S ATELIER>, as the name suggests, is a symbolic space designed for the two experts who are distinguished in their respective fields. Physicist Kim Sanguk frequents art museums and galleries in his spare time and Typographer Yu Jiwon has an avid interest in science, attending even physics conferences. Throughout the book, the two authors try to communicate and link different fields. Specifically, they share their own views and ideas on 26 keywords such as naturalness, complexity, sense, value, phase transition and humor. They find the similarity between art and science. The physicist links surrealism and quantum mechanics, both being born in Europe in 1920s. The typographer reads artistic patterns in living things and links it with the second law of thermodynamics. However, the authors’ interests are not limited to art and science. As art and science are influenced by their surroundings, the authors also turn their attention to society and history and try to read social contexts from various subjects brought into the book. Sometimes, they even delve into existential questions. This book will inspire the readers and provide the new ways of viewing things.
