Overview

Whispers of a Novelist is a collection of essays by Lee Sung-u who was selected as a finalist for foreign novels of the prix Femina of France. He is considered a likely candidate for a Nobel Prize in literature every year in Korea. The collection includes Lee’s insight into literature, philosophy, religion, and history, as well as thoughts on love, pain, sadness and essential stories for mankind.

Book Intro

Eunhaeng Namu introduces a collection of essays by Lee Seung-u who was selected as a finalist for foreign novels of the prix Femina of France and is considered a likely candidate for a Nobel Prize in literature every year in Korea. Lee talks about what inspires him to write, what he considers to be a proper attitude as a writer, the responsibility of the reader, and various classical works of foreign and Korean writers. He writes about the most beautiful and shining moments of his 40 years as a writer and human, along with personal thoughts on how a “writer” is born. His sentences which look deep into the human heart give us food for thought regarding literature, philosophy, religion, history, essential stories for humans, love, pain and sadness.

About the Author

Lee Seung-u



(English) Lee debuted with A portrait of Erysichton in 1981, and some of his other works are Strangers, The discreet man, People don’t know what’s in their homes, Kangtang, The life of love, The song of earth, The private life of plants, and The reverse side of life. Some books including The reverse side of life, have been translated and published in France, Germany and Japan. Lee has received the Oh Young-soo literary award, Dongin literary award, Hwang Sun-won literary award, Contemporary literature award, Dong-seo literary award and the Daesan literary award and he currently teaches creative writing at Chosun University.

 

(Japanese) 1981年、『韓国文学』新人賞に『エリュシクトーンの肖像』が入選し、デビュー。小説集『知らない人たち』、『慎重な人』、『人々は自分の家に何があるのかも知らない』などを出版し、長編小説として『カンタン』、『愛の生涯』、『地上の歌』、『植物の私生活』、『生の裏面』などがある。『生の裏面』をはじめとする数冊の本がフランス、ドイツ、日本などに翻訳出版された。現在、朝鮮大学校文芸創作科教授。オ・ヨンシュ文学賞、同人文学賞、ファン・スンウォン文学賞、現代文学賞、東西文学賞、大山文学賞を受賞。
