This is an essay that describes the terms of an unfair contract and the work environment of a school library where the author worked as a contract librarian over a span of six years.

While teaching reading as a parent volunteer in an elementary school, the author received a proposal from the school administrator to work a full-time position if she were to obtain certification as a librarian. After obtaining an assistant librarian's license and fully expecting to be hired full-time, a new school administrator claimed that hiring her full-time would be difficult. Astonishingly, the author faced being switched from a salary system to an hourly wage. Despite working the exact same job, she had to take on a less favorable employment contract. As of 2019, one in three librarians working in public libraries are contract-based and face the insecurity of being part-time, fixed-term, and indefinite contract workers.

The author wrote this book in the hope that librarians would one day work under healthier, more stable employment conditions.

초등학교 도서관의 계약직 사서로 근무한 저자가 6년 동안 경험한 도서관의 노동 현장과 학교와의 불공정한 계약 조건을 적은 에세이이다.

저자는 초등학교에서 학부모 재능기부로 독서 지도 수업을 하다 학교 관리자로부터 사서 자격증을 취득하면 정규직으로 채용하겠다는 제안을 받는다. 준사서 자격증을 취득하고 정규직으로 채용될 것이라는 기대도 잠시, 바뀐 학교 관리자는 정규직 채용이 어렵다고 말하고 오히려 저자의 급여를 월급제에서 시급제로 전환한다. 저자는 지금까지 같은 일을 해왔음에도 더 좋지 않은 고용계약을 해야 했다. 실제로 2019년 서울 지역 기준으로 공공도서관에서 일하는 사서 노동자 3명 중 1명은 비정규직이고 시간제, 기간제, 무기계약직으로 고용 불안에 시달리고 있다.

저자가 이 글을 쓴 이유는 도서관에서 일하는 노동자들이 안정된 고용조건에서 일하며, 도서관 노동 현장이 지금보다 더 건강해지길 바라는 마음에서다.
