This book covers various infectious diseases that threaten humanity, ranging from the plague to the COVID-19.

Book Intro

Nature's counterattack, Infectious diseases

It is highly likely that the year 2020, in which COVID-19 had swept the entire globe, will be remembered as a critical point in history. The impact that this invisible virus has brought upon the world is so strong that some even say history will be divided into “Before Corona” (B.C.) and “After Corona” (A.C). Every day we are experiencing the power of infectious diseases. This book explains infectious diseases in plain language that have existed in human history, covering COVID-19, which we are currently going through, the plague, the influenza virus, and various other pandemic diseases.

Microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, which are the main culprit behind infectious diseases, have existed even before humanity; their number is incomparably more extensive than that of humans. Humans recognized their existence only after the microscope’s invention, as they cannot be seen with the naked eye. However, the truth is that these infectious diseases have always been with us. In the past, when we could not discover the cause of an illness, people thought that infectious diseases like leprosy were divine punishment and treated patients as if they were sinners. While advancements in science have allowed us to no longer view infectious diseases as divine punishment, humanity has also been misled to believe that the era of infectious diseases has ended. No antibiotics or vaccines today can completely eliminate bacteria and viruses. Instead, the rate in which they spread across the world has increased along with advances in transportation methods, attacking those with compromised immune systems.

The prevention of infectious diseases requires coexistence with nature. The reckless development of forests and environmental destruction could tip the balance in nature and bring about new pathogenic bacteria unknown to us. We can only be prepared for infectious diseases when we find a way to coexist and strike a balance with microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. Also, we must help those people who are infected to receive proper treatment and overcome the disease, rather than to discriminate or criticize, so that our society as a whole may overcome the pandemic crisis.
