Book Intro

Nuclear Power, a two-faced energy source with both safety and danger!

Everything about nuclear power, which is also called the “third fire”

Following fire and electricity, nuclear power is called the “third fire” and has garnered much attention as an alternative to hydro and thermal energy. However, it is also a double-edged sword as it can inflict great harm in the case of a nuclear accident, as may be seen from the nuclear accident in Fukushima. This book teaches children how to properly understand nuclear power, which receives both praise and criticism as a clean, efficient energy source and, at the same time, as a seed of mass destruction.

When we think of nuclear energy or radiation, we generally think of the nuclear power plants that are far away from us or, we think of the radiation from X-rays at hospitals. Still, radiation exists very near to where we are. We can never be entirely free of radiation as we live amongst all kinds of electronic devices. Even the sunlight, soil, and rocks emit radiation. Considering that radiation comes even from nature itself, humans have always lived amidst radiation.

While radiation has always been around us in this way, our history with nuclear power is quite brief. Less than 100 years ago, we discovered the incredible energy emitted by nuclear reactions when the nuclear bomb was invented during the Second World War. If we use this energy as a weapon, it becomes a nuclear bomb. And if we control this energy, it becomes a nuclear power plant. From its beginning, nuclear power was two-faced, bearing both safety and danger.

We have no choice but to use energy in our everyday lives. We and nuclear power have a very close relationship, and it is important to understand it as one of the primary sources of energy. This book will guide children to objectively observe and understand nuclear power rather than view it with prejudice and misunderstanding.
