Narwhals are sometimes called the unicorns of the sea. What appears to be a long horn on the heads of male narwhals is actually a canine tooth on their upper jaw that projects through the lip. Not only are narwhals unusual in appearance, they are rare animals that live only in the Arctic Ocean and are relatively low in number.

This book describes the pain narwhals suffer from the blasts of seismic air guns fired into the ocean by ships conducting petroleum exploration.   When the seismic wave generated from the air gun penetrates the underwater strata and returns, the data is analyzed to find places where petroleum may exist. A tremendous sound is generated each time a seismic air gun is fired, which causes great pain to narwhals. Narwhals suffer from this terrible sound daily, once every ten seconds. Because of this, they experience hearing loss or exhibit abnormal behaviors such as sinking into the sea. This sometimes leads to death.

This book was written to help children sympathize with the narwhals, develop a sense of value for life and nature, and think of ways to protect nature.

외뿔고래는 일각고래, 긴이빨고래라고도 불린다. 수컷 외뿔고래는 머리 위에 긴 뿔을 하나 가지고 있는데, 위턱에 난 이빨이 머리를 뚫고 길게 자라난 것이다. 외뿔고래는 생김새가 특이할 뿐만 아니라 북극 바다에만 사는, 개체 수가 많지 않은 희귀한 고래다.

『외뿔고래의 슬픈 노래』는 석유 탐사를 위한 탄성파 공기총 발포로 외뿔고래가 겪는 아픔을 담고 있다. 석유 탐사선은 바닷속으로 공기총을 쏜다. 그때 발생하는 탄성파가 바닷속 지층을 뚫고 들어갔다 다시 돌아오면 그 정보를 분석해서 석유가 묻힌 곳을 찾는다. 그런데 공기총을 쏠 때마다 엄청난 소리가 나고, 그로 인해 외뿔고래가 큰 고통을 겪는다. 외뿔고래는 10초에 한 번, 매일 끔찍한 소음에 시달린다. 그 때문에 청각을 잃거나 바닷속에 가라앉는 등 이상 행동을 보이기도 한다. 그러다 결국 죽음에 이르기도 한다.

이 책은 아이들이 외뿔고래의 아픔을 함께 느끼며, 생명과 자연을 소중히 여기는 마음을 기르고 자연을 보호하는 방법을 생각하도록 도울 것이다.
