Overview

T-ball from Today! is the story of a group of kids who learn about competition and teamwork through T-ball.

Book Intro

T-ball becomes a part of the daily routine of four children whose days used to seem like a collection of mistakes.

Sehyung attends a small elementary school with only 32 students. His only joy is getting together with the boys in 5th and 6th grade to play soccer. School may be the only place to escape: his sister who always ignores him, missing his divorced mom who lives separately, his emotionally distant dad, and his nagging grandmother. On the other hand, Yerin, also in the 6th grade, hates to go to school lately. She is bigger and stronger than the other girls, but because of her sensitive heart, has somehow become the target of bullying by her peers. Chanwook, Yerin’s classmate, bullies her the most. The confident Chanwook is good at every sport, but he often loses his temper and takes it out on his friends. And 5th grader Minji has a stronger desire to win compared to the older kids. She stays quiet and avoids expressing her inner feelings, but she’s competitive above all else, which often stresses her out. All these different children have gathered on the playground to play T-ball, a new sport to them even though they’ve had a glimpse of it in their physical education textbooks. Their teacher suggested they participate in a sports club competition with T-ball since they’re no longer able to put together a dodge ball team due to the lack of players. The kids who all have their own troubles, and sometimes trouble their friends, are grouped into a single team to play T-ball. Their gradual discovery of the charm of T-ball is depicted through the voices of the four children and the vivid and lively scenes.

Just as each child has their own unique personality, T-ball touches their hearts differently. The sport encourages the desire to excel for Minji, provides the opportunity to hang out with classmates again for Yerin, sets the stage to showcase Chanwook’s abilities, and gives Sehyung’s family a chance to come together. At first, each child struggles with their own ego as they compete to avoid ending up as back-up players  . But as they learn how to play the new game that is different from baseball, they realize that it's okay to swing and miss, get an out, or even miss a fly ball. Finally, at the sports club competition, the students from Hojeong Elementary School make mistakes and get intimidated by stronger teams, but begin to find their own pace with each new game. They come to realize that it doesn't matter if one plays well or not, what counts is building teamwork. Through this story, readers can relate to the children's hard work and the cheerful sound of hitting a ball.
