Overview

This children's story is about Ji Hoon's extreme part-time job, as a so-called cat butler who has to serve the YouTube star Gangnam the Cat.

Book Intro

"I am the cutest, the most elegant, the loveliest, and wisest boss in the world, meow~!"

Reversed roles of a cat boss and a human part-time worker!

A twelve-year-old boy named Ji Hoon sees a part-time job advertisement and arrives at an imposing house with a pink gate. Waiting for his arrival is his future boss, Gangnam the Cat, who is a YouTube star. How is his boss this arrogant cat who greets him while lying in a box and then suddenly shows off the outdated “Gangnam Style" dance with no shame? Ji Hoon senses that his first job ever will not be easy. The scope of his job includes preparing meals, cleaning the toilet, claw care, taking and editing YouTube videos, and even responding to subscriber comments. He also keeps busy moving his boss, who keeps sitting on the computer keyboard or his lap. This story vividly depicts funny situations that cat lovers might experience while living with cats. It also shows various aspects of YouTube, which is well known by children. For example, Ji Hoon the cat butler is required to use royalty-free background music and fonts and read the manual to reply to subscriber comments. In addition, YouTuber Gangnam’s off-camera life is completely different from his on-camera persona.

Ji Hoon, who has suddenly become a cat butler, is a positive, warm-hearted boy who decides to take the extreme job because he believes that everything will be all right once he moves back to the apartment in Gangnam where he used to live. However, Ji Hoon’s obsession with Gangnam makes his classmates call him a “Gangnam sucker.” By using the word “Gangnam,” which appears everywhere in the story, not to mention is the title of the book, the author poignantly satirizes South Koreans’ desire for wealth and status, which is represented by Gangnam, the affluent and rich neighborhood in Seoul. Moreover, the author reminds readers that what is most important is a truthful mind and an open attitude.

Although Ji Hoon is outwardly a strong and brave boy who tries to deal with difficulties by himself, he hides his loneliness by pretending he doesn’t want any friends. When he meets Gangnam, he grows from Butler Kim, who serves a cat, to Producer Kim, who produces creative content, and even to a boss who warmly embraces Gangnam the Cat, who takes off her dress and turns into Grandpa Ae-ong. This book poignantly portrays how Ji Hoon moves step-by-step to realize his new dream of becoming a producer not just to make money and how he breaks down his wall of isolation and courageously opens himself to those around him. Gangnam and Ji Hoon, whose relationship has an unconventional beginning, subtly grows and builds into a friendship that heals each other’s wounds that have been disguised by their ego and serves as a big helping hand for another world in need of their help.
