Overview

The third volume of the Rice Cake Shop series, Rice Cake Wish Shop, is preceded by Man-bok’s Rice Cake Shop, which sold over 200,000 copies. What unravels is the story of Korang the rat’s desperate wish to become human and the secret behind the magic rice cake shop that grants his wish.

Book Intro

“Will delivering rice cakes to children help me become a human?”

Born with an unusually small body and unusually small front teeth, Korang the rat does not fit in with other rats and is always alone. Korang the rat, who would rather be a human than unable to live like a true rat, hears the story of a distant ancestor who became human after eating human fingernails. From that day on, he searches for children's fingernails to eat, desperately wishing to become a human. Then one day, Korang the rat stumbles upon a mysterious rice cake shop. The sign in front of the store reads, “Quickly deliver these ‘wishing rice cakes’ to children and you will become a human.” However, no name or address is written for the recipient. Korang the rat begins to wonder what child might need a wishing rice cake, while in his mind tasting the fingernails of each child. There are the spicy fingernails of Man-bok, who says bad words whenever he opens his mouth, the bitter fingernails of Jang-gun, and the fingernails of Eunji, which are so brittle that they break even before they are chewed. Korang the rat decides to deliver an invigorating mugwort rice cake to Eunji.
While in Man-bok’s Rice Cake Shop and Jang-gun’s Rice Cake Shop, each child appears as the story’s protagonist and visits the rice cake shop to make a difference in their own lives. Rice Cake Wish Shop depicts Korang the rat, who not only heals his own heart but also those of the children. When the three volumes are read in order, the stories become richer and should allow a deeper understanding of the self-affirming, self-esteem-recovering, healing philosophy behind these works.
