Overview

The tidal flat is an ecological treasure house, which is disappearing because of human greed. The mudflat is drying and the living creatures suffering from the change are making a desperate appeal.

Book Intro

(Englsih) Saemangeum : The Lost Mud Flats

The Saemangeum tidal flat on South Korea's west coast is full of life. It is also the largest wintering site for migratory birds on the Korean Peninsula as well as a resting place for endangered birds. But in 1991, people blocked the water by building a seawall and began construction to create new land here. Environmental groups protested, but the development continued, and the mudflat, which was once full of life, is drying. In countless photographs taken over fifteen years, the photographer Choi Yeongjin captured the mudflat as it changed from a place teeming with life to a desolate landscape, and this book, Saemangeum : The Lost Mud Flats is a collection of these pictures accompanying a story. This book tells the story of the sea and the tidal flat from the perspective of a spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered bird, and another bird waiting for the sandpiper.

I am a small bird living on the Saemangeum mudflat. The tidal flat is beautiful with plenty of food, but being small, I am often pushed away by other birds. I have a friend, who tells me to stand up for myself. He's much smaller than me, but he is an amazing migratory bird that flies thousands of kilometers all the way to Saemangeum. He is the spoon-billed sandpiper. His spoon-shaped bill is really an eye-catcher. Our friendship grew as we quietly made room for each other. I am looking forward to the day that my friend, who has gone far away, will return, but it seems the sandpiper has no plans to do so. I don't blame him, since food has become scarce after the tidal flat began to dry out one day. Then there are the deaths of massive numbers of clams and the dying fish revealing their white stomachs. This place has become a land where life crumbles. I miss my friend dearly, but a part of me is so worried, that it doesn't want him to return. And with such a heart, I still wait for him here today.

Il vole sur plusieurs milliers de kilomètres pour arriver à la vasière Saemangeum. Mais malheureusement, depuis que la vasière est asséchée, il ne revient plus.
