In the eyes of children, dads are mostly tired and exhausted. They go to work early in the morning and come back home late at night and fall asleep. Watching them, children think, "Why is my dad always busy?" or "I want to play with Dad..."

I Want to Be a Dad is a picture book that vividly depicts children's thoughts. The dad in the illustrations becomes a theme park ride himself, bathes his child, and they go camping together. It's the "cool dad" that children want to become one day, and also what they currently want from their dads. They imagine how cool it'd be if dads took them on a treasure-hunting adventure or became a superhero to protect them, but kids soon realize that what they genuinely want from their dads is not that special.

In truth, children's wishes are simple: they just want their dads to keep promises and spend time with them. A ""cool dad"" is not someone who is extraordinary. Anyone can become this kind of dad as long as they love their children. And we all know that already.

 『아빠가 되고 싶어』는 이런 아이들의 마음을 고스란히 담은 그림책이다. 그림 속에 등장하는 아빠는 직접 놀이기구가 되어 나와 놀아 주고, 아프지 않게 살살 때도 밀어 주고, 함께 캠핑도 가는 등 내가 되고 싶은 ‘멋진 아빠’의 모습 그대로이다. 또 지금 나의 아빠에게 바라는 점이기도 하다. 보물을 찾아 함께 모험을 떠나는 아빠, 슈퍼 히어로가 되어 나를 지켜 주는 아빠 등 아이는 멋진 아빠의 모습을 마음껏 상상해 본다. 하지만 아이들은 이내 곧 깨닫게 된다. 내가 아빠에게 원하는 것은 그리 대단한 것들이 아니라는 것을.
생각해 보면 아이들이 아빠에게 바라는 것은 그저 자신과의 약속을 잘 지키고, 함께 시간을 보내는 등 아주 사소한 것들이다. 그리고 ‘멋진 아빠’는 따로 있는 것이 아니라 아이를 사랑하는 마음만 으로도 누구나 멋진 아빠가 될 수 있다는 사실을 모두 알고 있다.
아빠와 아이의 소통으로 기대할 수 있는 긍정적인 효과는 생각 이상으로 크다. 아이들이 바른 생각과 따뜻한 마음을 갖고 자랄 수 있도록 하는 데에는 ‘아빠’의 역할이 중요하다. 그림책 『아빠가 되고 싶어』를 통해 많은 어린이들이 아빠의 사랑과 소중함을 다시 한 번 되새기고, 많은 아빠들 역시 아이와 함께 보내는 시간을 더욱 많이 가질 수 있게 되기를 바란다."
