Overview

The book is a mystery thriller in which the protagonist searching for her lost daughter becomes aware of a horrific murder that happened in a village 16 years ago.

Book Intro

A Meteorite from the Sky and a Missing Girl

A meteorite falls at Guwa Village and the small town starts swarming with meteor hunters and out-of-towners. The day after the meteor falls, Hee-ryeong and Myeon-su discover that their daughter Byeol-yi is missing. The last location they trace Byeol-yi’s phone signal is the Uiji Reservoir. The husband and wife report their daughter’s missing case to the country town police, but they are slow to move. So, the father Myeon-su, a former reporter, starts to look for Byeol-yi on his own armed with just his camera and a notebook.

Hee-ryeong’s Secret From 16 Years Ago

While trying to find his daughter, Myeon-su runs into an herb picker at the reservoir whose strange behavior arouses his suspicion. The small village is not as peaceful as it seems when Myeon-su discovers that there was a case of arson sixteen years ago in which his wife Hee-ryeong was the only witness. At the time, the prime suspects were Hwang Sang-tae, a religious cult leader and its elder, Jeon Jong-man. Even though Hee-ryeong had a photo evidence that could prove the criminal guilty, Elder Jeon sweettalked her into falsely testifying that Hwang Sang-tae had set the fire.

Traces of Byeol-yi and the Deaths of Suspects

Myeon-su goes after Hwang Sang-tae believing that he could have kidnapped his daughter for revenge. However, Hwang is found to be almost blind and deaf from burns.

Myeon-su and his wife then go to see Mr. Choi who was Elder Jeon’s right-hand man, as he seemed to be deeply involved in the case. At Elder Jeon’s stable, they find a rice roll, a dog collar and piece of the meteor. The herb picker, Hwang Sang-tae and Mr. Choi are all found dead, and Myeon-su who had met with them recently is arrested as the suspect

for their murders. Right before he is taken away, he hands a picture he got from Hwang Sangtae to his wife Heeryeong. It was a picture that Hee-ryeong had previously returned to Hwang out of guilt and it showed Hwang’s daughter in a dog kennel with a huge dog.

The Truth About Elder Jeon Jong-man is Revealed

“Burn everyone gathered at the church or your daughter will die.” Elder Jeon believes that the meteor that fell at Guwa Village is a celestial sign and plans to cleanse the village of meteor hunters and villagers, just like he did sixteen years ago. Heeryeong wakes up tied up in Elder Jeon’s house. In her hand is a remote control with which she can choose between saving either her daughter or all the people gathered in the church. Just like Hwang Sang-tae was trapped sixteen years ago, she has to kill the people in the church if she wants to save her own daughter.
